Halle Bailey shared some behind-the-scenes photos from the set of the upcoming live-action remake of Disney's The Little Mermaid.

Bailey, who will star as Ariel in the upcoming film, posted the photos on Instagram to celebrate her success in 2021. One photo included a glimpse at the film's script, with her character's name written across the front page; another showed Bailey swimming in the ocean of Sardinia, Italy, where The Little Mermaid filmed over the summer; and two other photos offer a look at the CGI and special effects that go into turning a human into a mermaid. "a glimpse of my 2021," Bailey wrote in the caption. "a year i will never forget..from living overseas to coming home and still getting to do what i've always dreamed of..i feel immensely proud of myself."

Much of Bailey's appearance as a mermaid in the film will likely be constructed using CGI. Behind-the-scenes photos released in June 2021 showed Bailey and her co-star Jonah Hauer-King, who will play Prince Eric, on a beach. In the photos, Bailey wore what looked to be a wetsuit and matching tail in lieu of Ariel's traditional shell-bikini top, with the tail likely a practical reference for what will be recreated in CGI in post-production.

The live-action remake of Disney's 1989 animated classic began production in 2016, but Bailey, known for her work as one half of the R&B duo Chloe & Halle, was not cast in the lead role until 2019. Her casting was initially met with some backlash, as she is a person of color who was cast as a mermaid that was depicted as white in the original. "I feel like I'm dreaming and I'm just grateful and I don't pay attention to the negativity," the actor said at the time. "I just feel like, you know, this role is something bigger than me, and greater, and it's gonna be beautiful. I'm just so excited to be a part of it, and, yeah."

Bailey wrapped filming on The Little Mermaid in July of this year, sharing the first official photo of herself as Ariel on a beach in Sardinia, Italy. "after auditioning for this film when i was 18 just about to turn 19, to now finishing filming through a pandemic when i turned 21," she said at the time. "..we have finally made it.

Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid stars Bailey, Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian. The film arrives in theaters on May 26, 2023.
