Disney's Little Mermaid Drops a Stunning New Look at Halle Bailey's Ariel

Disney Takes Audiences Under the Sea in May 2023

Originally announced in 2016, The Little Mermaid is a live-action remake of the 1989 Disney animated film of the same name, which is also loosely based on the timeless Hans Christian Anderson tale. Bailey, who is known for her role on the Grown-ish television series, was cast as Ariel in 2019. "After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance -- plus a glorious singing voice -- all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role," Rob Marshall, who is directing the film, said at the time.

The first official photo of Bailey as Ariel emerged in July 2022 on Bailey's Instagram. "and just like that..that’s a wrap," she posted. "after auditioning for this film when i was 18 just about to turn 19 , to now finishing filming through a pandemic when i turned 21 ..we have finally made it... i feel so grateful to have experienced this film in all of its glory..it has been the toughest experience being away from everything and everyone i’ve ever known, to feeling self doubt/ loneliness, but also feeling such freedom and perseverance as i’ve reached the end. this experience has made me so much stronger than i ever thought i could be."

Disney released a brief teaser trailer, which shows off Bailey's singing voice and the film's underwater landscape, for The Little Mermaid at Disney's D23 Expo in September. In addition to Bailey, the film also stars Jonah Haur-King as Prince Eric, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Awkwafina as Scuttle, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina and more. Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda all serve as producers, while Miranda also co-wrote a handful of new songs for the film.

The Little Mermaid will release theatrically on May 26, 2023.
