Disney Jumps Into Lightspeed

A racing movie set in outer space is one of those ideas that, when you hear it, you realize that it sounds so obvious you can't believe no-one's ever done it before. Which might explain why Disney were so eager to pick up Lightspeed.

The House of Mouse has just purchased Terry Rossio and Bill Marsilli's spec script for Jerry Bruckheimer to produce. Rossio and Bruckheimer are no strangers, of course; Rossio being the co-writer of all of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies to date. Lightspeed replaces sea-shanties with electronica, however, telling the story of a new recruit to Earth's Interstellar Racing Team as they prepare to speed across a universe on the brink of war.

No director or cast has been announced yet, but expect news soon, and a movie by summer 2012.
