Confirming earlier indications that Disney is moving ahead with a sequel to TRON: Legacy, Heat Vision reports the studio has hired Eight Below screenwriter David DiGilio to tackle the script. He replaces original writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who are engrossed in the upcoming ABC drama Once Upon a Time.
It's unclear whether Joseph Kosinski will return to direct the follow-up to the 2010 film, which grossed $400 million worldwide, but previous reports had him collaborating with Kitsis and Horowitz, at least before their fairy-tale pilot was picked up.
Legacy cost an estimated $170 million to produce, with a comparable budget for marketing, so the $400-million haul didn't exactly make a sequel a given. However, as Deadline noted in April, the movie fed other Disney divisions, with the TRON: Legacy soundtrack selling 616,000 copies and the movie inspiring attractions at California Adventure and, potentially, the new Shanghai theme park. There's also the matter of TRON: Uprising, the animated prequel set to air next summer on Disney XD.
