Dynamite Entertainment announced writer Elliott Kalan and artist Alessandro Ranaldi are launching a new Disney Villains: Hades series in June 2023. The series will follow the titular villain, who was voiced by James Woods in the Disney animated film (which is also being adapted into a live-action remake from Disney), as he embarks on a mission to destroy some of Mount Olympus' most powerful deities. Disney Villains: Hades will also introduce readers to a number of new characters, including a spider-girl named Arachne, a singer named Orpheus, a winged Icarus and more.

The publisher said of the new series, "In Kalan’s new tale, Hades doesn’t get an invite to the weekly brunch at Mount Olympus -- which obviously calls for the complete and total destruction of his fellow deities. In his mission to make that happen, he must get his devilish hands on the legendary Golden Fleece of Colchis. Because the Fleece happens to be guarded by a dragon and legion of soldiers, the lord of darkness therefore has to round up a ragtag party of minions and allies to accomplish his epic quest."

"I was already a teenager when Hercules came out, and a little old -- according to my friends -- to go see it in the theaters," said Kalan. "So of course I saw it in the theaters anyway, because Disney had been on an epic roll for the past decade or so, and I really enjoyed it. I took to Hades right away. I've always loved villain characters, and I'm a sucker for demons and devils, so instantly he was my favorite character in the film. Plus, he was the funniest one there."

Scar and Maleficent Also Have Their Own Disney Villains Series

Disney Villains: Hades is one of several Disney Villains series from Dynamite Entertainment. In April 2023, the publisher launched Disney Villains: Scar, following the main antagonist from 1994's The Lion King, from Chuck Brown, Trevor Fraley, Chiara Di Francia and Jeff Eckleberry. Disney Villains: Maleficent followed in May 2023, which is based on the character from 1959's Sleeping Beauty and comes from writer and artist Soo Lee. Additionally, the publisher has recently put out several other Disney-related titles, including Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck and the upcoming Gargoyles: Dark Ages.

Disney Villains: Hades #1 features cover art by Karen S. Darboe, Jae Lee, Trish Forstner, Francesco Tomaselli and Alessandro Ranaldi. The issue releases in June 2023 from Dynamite.
