Weisman's Gargoyles premiered on the small screen in 1994 and became an overnight household name thanks to its explosive popularity. The series followed the adventures and exploits of an ancient Scottish clan of the eponymous beasts who were trapped in their rigid stone forms for one thousand years before being set free in present-day New York City. Together with NYPD detective Elisa Maza, the Gargoyle's would battle against the machinations of ruthless billionaire David Xanatos, as well as various other threats both worldly and supernatural.

Gargoyles Returns for a New Season From Dynamite

Dynamite's new ongoing series, which was announced in July 2022, is slated to mark another "season" of the original series. Weisman previously noted where in the Gargoyles' chronology the new series will take place, as well as what previous works are considered canon with its release. "Canon is the 65 episodes of Season 1 and 2 of Gargoyles (which originally aired from 1994-1996), plus the twelve issues of the SLG [Slave Labor Graphics] Gargoyles comic from earlier this century, and the six issues of the SLG Gargoyles: Bad Guys comic from that same time," he explained. As to where this comic fits into the canon, Weisman said, "Issue #1 of the new Gargoyles comic from Dynamite is set a few months after the last SLG issue."

Weisman has also offered fans an idea of where the upcoming Gargoyles title is headed. "The storyline for the first big arc is called 'Here in Manhattan' and it is something that I've had in my head to do going way back to the tv series," Weisman stated. "We've got a story that sort of opens with something that we establish, which is that the mutates down in The Labyrinth, Elise's brother Derek who goes by Talon and his mate Maggie the cat are expecting a baby and... What happens next? That baby is going to be of interest to a number of different people."

Gargoyles #1 is written by Weisman, with art by Kambadais and letters by Jeff Eckleberry. Cover art for the issue come courtesy of Kambadais, Jae Lee, Lucio Parrillo, Amanda Conner, David Nakayama, Lesley "Leirix" Li, Tony Fleecs and more. Gargoyles #1 is set to go on sale on Dec. 7 from Dynamite Entertainment. The original Gargoyles animated series is currently streaming on Disney+.
