Ever since it purchased comics powerhouse Marvel Comics last year, the question surrounding the Walt Disney Company is whether or not the entertainment giant would make certain departments at Marvel irrelevant (and vice versa). To date, most of the public moves connected to the Marvel buyout have been more minor shifts in publishing rights -Â BOOM! Studios losing the ability to make Disney comics while Disney movie graphic novels like “TRON” get reprinted as single Marvel issues -Â however, today the first big sign of high-level redundancies has hit.
Deadline Hollywood has a story about today’s firing of Marvel Studios Marketing Department heads including EVP of Worldwide Marketing Dana Precious, VP of Worldwide Marketing Jeffrey Stewart and Manager of Worldwide Marketing Jodi Miller. The official reason appears to be redundancies as Disney will distribute Marvel films itself starting with “Avengers” rather than have those functions handled by Paramount as it had been with everything from “Iron Man” and “Incredible Hulk” to “Thor” and “Captain America.” The news comes just after Marvel made its first appearance at Disney’s self-run convention/promotional blitz the D23 Expo.
However, Deadline is running with word that the firings may also be performance related, citing anonymous sources who’ve said things including, “Not up to or have the skill set to release this brand properly”… “Their job was to keep track of the people doing the real work”… “Paper pushers”… “Would it have killed them to return an email?”… “Disney doesn’t need someone to cut its trailers.”
In any event, for now the House of Mouse seems perfectly happy with the creative end of Marvel’s movie business as studio head Kevin Feige remains front and center for future Marvel movies.
