Disney’s live-action prequel to their 1961 animated movie 101 Dalmatians, Cruella, has cast Kirby Howell-Baptiste.
Howell-Baptiste, who stars on the popular show The Good Place, will join Emily Beecham and Emma Stone in the origin story depicting the memorable villain. At the time of writing, there is no information on the character Howell-Baptiste will be playing.
In addition to appearing in The Good Place, Howell-Baptiste has also starred in BBC America’s Killing Eve, Hulu’s Veronica Mars, CBS All Access’ Why Women Kill and HBO’s Barry.
Cruella is reportedly set in 1970s London and has been described as having a punk rock aesthetic. It is currently in production and will make Cruella the second famous Disney villain to receive an original spinoff, following Angelina Jolie’s turn as Maleficent. This also marks the second live-action depiction of Cruella -- the first being the 1996 live-action version of 101 Dalmations, which starred Glenn Close in the role.
Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie and stars Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Emily Beecham. It is scheduled for release on May 28, 2021.
