In response to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Disney has streamlined how it distributes content.

Distribution and commercialization duties for Disney's media and entertainment sectors will all be shifted into a new Media and Entertainment Distribution entity. This organization will be overseen by Kareem Daniel and will have a focus on streaming content.

Media and Entertainment Distribution will be split into three sections: Studios, General Entertainment and Sports. These divisions will be run by Alan Horn and Alan Bergman, Peter Rice and Jimmy Pitaro. Studios will be focused on the various film divisions at Disney; General Entertainment will be centered on the companies television brands; Finally, Sports will cover Disney's various ESPN platforms. The entire MED division will be in charge of monetizing content for the studio as well as being responsible for Disney's various streaming services.

"Given the incredible success of Disney+ and our plans to accelerate our direct-to-consumer business, we are strategically positioning our Company to more effectively support our growth strategy and increase shareholder value," Disney CEO Bob Chapek said. "Managing content creation distinct from distribution will allow us to be more effective and nimble in making the content consumers want most, delivered in the way they prefer to consume it."

"I’m honored to be able to lead this new organization during such a pivotal and exciting time for our Company, and I’m grateful to Bob for giving me the opportunity," Media and Entertainment Distribution head Kareem Daniel added.

Streaming services, which will be a core focus of the Media and Entertainment Distribution division, have become especially important to Disney during the pandemic. Services like Disney+ and Hulu can continue to release content while other branches of Disney, such as divisions dedicated to theatrically released movies, have been stuck in limbo. Even before this streamlining, Disney's commitment to streaming has been evident in its decision to have theatrical releases like Hamilton and Soul premiere on Disney+ instead.
