Disney is so well known for its animation that it's often forgotten that their famous characters have also been a part of the comic book industry. While it's also a given that fans will recognise both Marvel and Star Wars characters as part of Disney's huge comic brand, it's a little more uncommon to see the likes of Mickey Mouse in some of those titles.
Over the years there have been a vast array of comic book projects that sought to bring some of Disney's famous properties to readers across the world. Many of them are unknown, but few of them are outright failures. In fact, there's some great titles amongst Disney's comic book archives.
10 Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Based on the popular Disney ride which populates the Walt Disney Parks across the world, the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad series aimed to add a little bit more mythology, to an experience that fans were already so familiar with.
Written by Dennis "Hopeless" Hallum with art from Tigh Walker, this 5 issue miniseries was a rollicking Western adventure which allowed readers to learn some of the legends that took place on that very Railroad.
9 The Duck Avenger
Many fans probably hadn't had even heard of this Donald Duck comic, which was produced back in the 90s (although reprinted in the 2010s so that more English readers could enjoy the adventures). It was in fact originally intended for a foreign market.
Created by a team including Alessandro Sisti, Ezio Sisto, Marco Bolla, Alberto Lavoradori and Jonathan Gray, this comic book saw Donald Duck take on the superhero secret identity to fight crime and to get a little bit of revenge on his own family!
8 Haunted Mansion
The Haunted Mansion is an absolutely iconic ride at the Disney Parks. It's even inspired a movie with the same name, although fans were far less receptive to that than they were this 5 issue comic run, from the Disney Kingdoms series.
With the history of the Haunted Mansion explored further and the iconic ghosts from the story itself, each issue contained a number of small stories created by a completely unique team of artists and writers. It's probably a perfect comic book for the Halloween season!
7 Ducktales
Ducktales is the well known and popular TV show that was recently cancelled by Disney. But the animated hit has also had a few comic book spin-offs over the years. Back during the original show there was a comic book series.
However, in line with the recent return of the show to TV screens, Disney commissioned a set of comics from IDW Publishing, who have created a number of great adventures starring Donald, Scrooge McDuck and his nephews.
6 Gargoyles
Gargoyles is yet another Disney series which featured incredible storylines and some truly memorable characters. The cartoon is a cult classic and has certainly stood the test of time, with fans clamouring for the Disney+ addition.
Back during its original release a comic book series was commissioned so that young readers could explore these characters in another setting. Considered just as ground breaking, these accompanying comics managed to flesh out the world further.
5 Pirates Of The Caribbean
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has always been a big screen series. It has rarely crossed over to other mediums, although there are some novels and some video games which are the exception to that rule. It's a surprise therefore that there are any comics at all!
But without TV shows and larger ongoing book series, the comics published by Joe books, are a great way to see more adventures from Captain Jack Sparrow, as he navigates a world of swashbuckling heroes and fantasy villains, much like the aquatic foes of other series like Dungeons and Dragons.
4 Figment
Figment is a dragon like character created by the Disney Company. He's often involved in big adventures involving science and technology. At Disney parks he has his own exclusive ride, exploring the world of invention with kids.
The comic books, written by Jim Zub and illustrated by Filipe Andrade, take a similar approach, aiming themselves at a younger audience. Multiple stories fill two volumes of this title, with Figment taking a starring role, as he goes on a number of huge adventures.
3 Enchanted Tiki Room
The Enchanted Tiki Room is yet another experience at Disney resorts and was one of Walt Disney's favorites. It includes a number of amazing animatronics that sing a song about the Tiki Room and the magic there.
The comic books, written by Jon Adams and illustrated by Horacio Domingues, pick up this story and in a short run try to flesh out some of these memorable characters a little further. This comic certainly flew under the radar for many, but has proven to be a great addition to the Tiki legacy.
2 Disney Princess Comic Strip
The Disney Princesses are absolutely the crowning jewel of the Walt Disney Company, so it isn't too surprising that they wanted to bring some of these iconic characters into the world of comic books.
For younger fans, they were given a chance to enjoy their favorite Princesses in a new format (brought to life by Amy Mebberson,) helping their reading and allowing the characters themselves to go on small adventures, which compliment the themes of the films.
1 Robin Hood
Robin Hood has been portrayed in comics in a number of different ways. It's probably unexpected that the Disney version of the character, who has been designed as a fox, actually has his own comic.
The underrated animated classic has always been a bit of a cult hit and fans of the film can continue to step into the mythology of this retelling of the classic tale, thanks to the Robin Hood comic book series by Robert Pet.
