Star Wars Day comes from fans using "May the 4th be with you" as a play on the famous quote from the franchise, "May the Force be with you." The actual origins of the phrase have a surprising source in history. To celebrate the election of Margaret Thatcher to the office of Prime Minister, the Tory party took out an ad that said "May The Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations." The election took place in 1979, two years after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Since then, the day has taken on a life of its own, particularly after series creator George Lucas sold the rights to Disney. With new shows, comics and novels in the pipeline, not to mention the cultural impact of the property, the Fourth will continue to be with fans.
