Star Chadwick Boseman has said Disney always intended to push Black Panther as a Best Picture contender, but the studio is going well beyond that. Disney's 2018 awards website lists 16 potential categories for the film, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress.

Boseman is being promoted by the studio for a Best Actor nomination for his lead performance at T'Challa. while supporting nods are being sought for Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.

The Academy sparked controversy last month when it announced the addition of a category honoring "outstanding achievement in popular film."

The 2019 Oscars will be held Feb. 24, 2019.
