Disney and the Motion Picture Association declared that they won't be financially supporting members of Congress who refused to certify Joe Biden's win of the U.S. presidency.

Both companies cited Jan. 6's riot at the U.S. Capitol Building -- an event that aimed to usurp the U.S. presidency through violent force for Donald Trump -- as contributing to this fiscal decision. The MPA and Disney vowed to not donate "for the foreseeable future" to these eight senators and 139 representatives, nor their 2021 campaigns, as reported by Variety.

According to U.S. electoral practices, the United States Congress is responsible for counting the Electoral College votes on Jan. 6 and certifying them. As Congress members voted against recognizing votes received for Biden from Arizona and Pennslyvania, civilians decided to storm the U.S. Capitol Building where vote certification was happening to show their support of rejecting Biden's win. Public statements from Congress members rejecting Biden's presidential win happened prior to the riot, during and afterward.

"The insurrection at our nation’s Capitol was a direct assault on one of our country’s most revered tenets: the peaceful transition of power," Disney commented in a public statement. "In the immediate aftermath of that appalling siege, Members of Congress had an opportunity to unite — an opportunity that some sadly refused to embrace," the company added. "In light of these events, we have decided we will not make political contributions in 2021 to lawmakers who voted to reject the certification of the Electoral College votes."

Patrick Kilcur, the MPA's executive vice president of public affairs, commented on how the recent riot "shocked and saddened" the film and television trade group. "What’s more, many MPA and member company employees, myself included, spent many years of our careers working in the Capitol as congressional staff," Kilcur added. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with our friends and colleagues who bravely endured last week’s assault — and continue to serve our country during these challenging times."

Comcast, AT&T, Microsoft, Facebook and Google also voiced their 2021 plans to not financially support U.S. politicians who refused to certify Biden's win. Recently, Amazon also halted its PAC contributions to the aforementioned members of congress, publicly stating it doesn't want to support "an unacceptable attempt to undermine a legitimate democratic process."

The MPA is a Hollywood trade group that represents the five largest film and television studios within the U.S., which includes Warner Bros. Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures and Netflix Studios.
