On the heels of the tease by star Will Smith, Disney has debuted the first look at its live-action Aladdin.

A remake of the 1992 animated hit, which is itself based on the folktale from One Thousand and One Nights, the musical romantic fantasy-adventures is in the mold of live-action adaptations, like The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella, which plumbs the studio's decades-old back catalog for new blockbusters.

The trailer goes heavy on the nostalgia, from the glimpse viewers get of Iago, one of the sinister Jafar's henchmen, to the voice of the Cave of Wonders, the resting place of the lamp that Aladdin inevitably uses to summon a genie, kicking off numerous misadventures and putting him on a course to meet  Princess Jasmine. The teaser cuts off right at the critical moment when Aladdin acquires the lamp, and doesn't go so far as to reveal the genie himself, who was originally played by Robin Williams in the animated movie, but will be played by Will Smith in the live-action version.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, Aladdin stars Mena Massoud in the title role, with Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Will Smith as Genie, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban as The Sultan, Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders, and Numan Acar as Hakim. The film arrives May 24, 2019.
