WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 2, Episode 2, of A Discovery of Witches, streaming now on Sundance Now, Shudder and AMC+.

In the second season premiere of A Discovery of Witches, Diana and Matthew completed their timewalk to London in 1590 where Matthew has taken steps to resume the life he had at the time as Matthew Roydon, a spy for Queen Elizabeth I. This is a far cry from his 21st century life as a scientist, and his old friend, Christopher Marlowe, indicated it might change him. In this week’s episode, however, Matthew makes moves that indicate his biggest fear about being back in the 16th century is the possibility of being summoned by his vampire father, Philippe, who is not alive in the present day, but was in 1590.

At the end of last week’s episode Matthew began working under the orders of William Cecil, aka Lord Burghley, a real historical figure who was a prominent adviser to the queen. It quickly became clear that one of the primary duties the A Discovery of Witches incarnation of Cecil gives Matthew is the extraction of information from prisoners through torture. And in this week’s episode, Cecil instructs him to torture a witch named Thomas Caldwell, who Cecil believes is conspiring with other witches against the queen.

At the same time, Matthew’s presence in the city has attracted the attention of Father Hubbard, the vampire leader of the creatures of London. Matthew and Diana are summoned to see him that evening. Although Philippe has arranged a treaty between Hubbard and the De Clermont family, that apparently doesn’t extend to Diana, so Matthew knows he must present Diana as instructed. Matthew doesn’t like Father Hubbard because, although he helps and protects the vampires, witches and daemons of London, he also controls them. Part of that happens through a ritual in which he drinks their blood, which allows him to learn their secrets. Given Diana’s secrets, Matthew is determined not to allow Hubbard to drink Diana’s blood, but he needs a good excuse to avoid that outcome.

As soon as they arrive at Hubbard’s den, Hubbard grabs Diana by the shoulder, a move that incenses Matthew. If that weren’t bad enough, Hubbard notices the scars on Diana’s neck that indicate Matthew has fed on her. While Matthew wants to avoid saying anything, Diana is truthful. She explains the incident that happened at the end of last season: Matthew was dying so Diana forced him to drink her blood. Hubbard seems to accept this and lets the idea of drinking Diana’s blood go, at least for the time being. However, he cautions the pair that nothing happens in the city without him allowing it.

The next day, Hubbard stops Matthew when he's on his way to interrogating Caldwell. Caldwell is one of his children and he wants Matthew to use his influence to free him. When Matthew brushes him off, Hubbard threatens to contact Philippe about the matter. This stops Matthew in his tracks. He insists this has nothing to do with his father, and gives Hubbard a meaningful look before continuing on.

He shares his frustration with being caught between Cecil and Hubbard’s competing interests with Marlowe who advises him to contact Philippe, but Matthew insists Philippe can’t find out about Diana. So Matthew devices a solution on his own. He goes to Caldwell’s prison cell, but instead of interrogating him or freeing him, he snaps his neck. Matthew believes he had to kill Caldwell to keep Diana safe from Philippe, but he has now angered both Cecil and Hubbard.

Given the circumstances, Hubbard decides to alert Philippe to Matthew's activities in London, so it appears Matthew won’t be able to avoid his father in the past the way he’d hoped after all. What’s unclear is what he fears Philippe will do if he meets Diana. While vampires and witches are enemies, this rivalry doesn’t seem to have been a major preoccupation of Philippe’s. And when they were in the present day, Matthew gave the impression that his relationship with his vampire father was positive until Philippe’s death, so it seems odd that Matthew wouldn’t want to take the opportunity to see him again. One way or another, with Hubbard’s message now on its way to him, Philippe is likely to get involved in his son’s affairs sooner rather than later.
