WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 2, Episode 3, of A Discovery of Witches, streaming now on Sundance Now, Shudder and AMC+.

One of the reasons Diana and Matthew timewalked to 1590 London in the Season 2 premiere of A Discovery of Witches was to find Diana a witch who could teach her to control and use her magical power. In last week’s episode, she met Goody Alsop, a powerful witch who ultimately agreed to be her teacher. And in this week’s episode, her training finally begins.

For Diana’s first lesson, Goody Alsop has assembled a group of three other witches to help. She asks Diana to look at the room with her "witch’s sight," which enables Diana to see delicate threads of various colors in the air. According to Goody Alsop, these threads represent the web of all life, and a weaver, a witch like Diana who creates their own spells, must select from these threads to make their new spells work. Furthermore, each thread color corresponds to a particular element: white for air, green for earth, blue for water and red for fire.

Individual witches usually work within a particular element, but when Goody tries to determine what element Diana’s power lies in by having her select the thread that calls out to her most, Diana can’t manage to grab a single one. Diana is disturbed by her inability to complete this simple task, but Goody seems amazed. Unlike most witches who can only see the threads of one element, Diana’s ability to see them all means her magic lies in all of them, giving her an overwhelming amount of power.

During her next lesson, Goody Alsop starts to walk Diana through the steps to create her own spells. As each witch hands a thread representing one of the elements to her, Diana completes another step of the spell. With effort, Diana knots the different threads together one by one, but before she can reach the end of the spell, she lifts her arms and a magical tree becomes visible around her before she staggers away, exhausted. Goody explains the tree she manifested was a rowan tree, which symbolizes a "union of opposites," something Goody takes as a positive sign.

Unfortunately, there is no third lesson because Diana must join Matthew on a journey to see his father, Philippe, and to retrieve the Ashmole 782 text. Goody Alsop is perturbed by this because it will require Diana to leave London for an extended time, but Diana insists she must go and promises she’ll continue to study while she’s away. Still, it's good to see Diana finally learning more about her magic and taking steps to become the powerful witch she was clearly born to be.
