If anyone knows how to relax, it's Saitama. One-Punch Man's low-key strongest hero enjoys lounging far more than he does saving the world, but his downtime is often interrupted by various villains and goings on in the world around him. However, for those looking for a glimpse inside of Saitama's daily life minus the interruptions, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K may be the series that can fill in the gaps.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K follows the titular protagonist Saiki Kusuo as he attempts to live an average life, hiding his psychic powers from the world. The series, adapted from the manga by Shūichi Asō, is equal parts comedy and slice of life high school drama saturated with gag-filled action. Here's how Saiki's down to earth dealings with his bumbling cast of peers are a treat for those who wish for a little more humanity in the midst of the mayhem.

Saiki and Saitama's Friendships

Ignoring for a moment that Saiki has been endowed with extraordinary psychic powers, his friendships and daily schedule mirrors that of a normal human. He strives to be simply average among them, with all of his might. Like One-Punch Man's cast of side characters, Saiki's varied relationships reflect a different side to his personality and showcases his ability to excel at being ordinary.

Take for instance Saiki's classmate Kaido Shun. Kaido, an average student himself with a serious hero obsession as expressed in the fictional personality Jet-Black Wings, is often Saiki's primary annoyance simply for imagining a world wherein heroes exist. The way Saiki handles his delusions of grandeur are often endearing, however, whether scaring a potential bully or secretly utilizing his powers to get the would-be hero out of real danger. The cold on the outside, soft on the inside personality Saiki has perfected gives him an aura of attraction in spite of himself, which makes his friendship with Kaido stronger over time. Both Saiki and Saitama's reluctant friendship with otherwise annoying tag-alongs -- in Saitama's case, the cyborg known as Genos -- displays their loyalty to friends which often takes priority over leisure.

One-Punch Man fans for whom Saitama and Genos' hang-out sessions are cut criminally short will find Saiki's interactions with his friends without interruption a welcome reprieve.

Comedy in the Face of Danger

Saiki K. from The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.

Both Saitama and Saiki share a desire for normalcy, only Saitama's problems are often times world-ending. On a level playing field, both gifted heroes face similar dilemmas and handle them in often comedic ways.

Saitama's issues mainly stem from invasions and rogue experiments gone wrong, but the series' heart lies in its slapstick antics off the battlefield. A memorable moment in the One-Punch Man legend involved Saitama taking on his most powerful opponent, a lowly mosquito. Saiki's problems are almost an extension of the Saitama vs. Mosquito battle, a duel with little to no life-changing consequences.

In The Disastrous Life of Saiki K Season 1, Episode 6, “Enticing Premium Quality Coffee Jello,” Saiki sacrifices his expensive dessert in order to rescue a boy's prized baseball. Given Saiki's obsession with the coffee dessert, the stakes are as high as they truly get in the series. His selflessness, however, overcomes. At other times, when the stakes are somewhat higher but still minor in the scope of earth's existence, Saiki's solutions are rather unique. When Saiki's mom inadvertently reveals his psychic abilities to his friends during a New Years Eve dinner in Season 1, Episode 7, “Noisy New Year's,” Saiki averts the crisis by swapping his friend's memories of the event. When the school's most popular girl falls for him over the course of the series, Saiki finds her perfect personality his greatest challenge, relying on luck and circumstances to defeat her advances.

All of Saiki's confrontations are humorous and non-threatening, much in the same way Saitama's brief dual with the mosquito is played for laughs. Between the real threats that plague Saitama, Saiki's casual problems are a gentle reminder that life can exist without the threat of extinction.

Two Sides of the Same Coin

In between the out-of-this-world usage of powers, both Saitama and Saiki K share similar passions for an ordinary life. Where fans of One-Punch Man will truly find familiarity is in Saiki K's use of sight gags and friendships which are explored further than One-Punch Man's monsters could ever allow. In the end, One-Punch Man and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K offer similarly lighthearted escapism.
