Director Simon West Oozes Onto 'The Blob' Remake

The Expendables 2 director Simon West has signed on to Goldcrest Film's remake of  the 1958 horror/sci-fi classic The Blob, Deadline reports.

The original film, which starred a 27-year-old Steve McQueen in his first leading role (playing a teenager, no less), centers on a gelatinous monsters that arrives on Earth inside a meteorite that crashes in Pennsylvania. The Blob increases in size each time it consumes a person, and is only defeated after it's discovered the creature is averse to cold.

A sequel, Beware! The Blob, was released in 1972, and the original was remade in 1988 (with a script by director Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont).

West explained how he plans to update the film, saying, "With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying."

Principal photography is set to begin this summer.
