Director Adam McKay Promises Great Things For Anchorman 2

Adam McKay is a very busy man, and he’s become even busier thanks to Anchorman 2. The film was announced back in March and we got a poster and two teaser trailers in May, but things have been pretty silent since then. That’s apparently because McKay and star Will Ferrell are busy rewriting and perfecting the script so everything will be ready when filming starts in the spring.

Although he may be busy, McKay took time talk talk with The Playlist about the forthcoming movie. While we aren’t sure how serious he was about some of the things planned (was Anchorman 2 really almost a Broadway show?), he did talk a bit about the tone of the sequel.

“Even though it’s going to be a big silly movie, it’s all about the rise of the new media and 24-hour news cycle,” he said, “and there’s a lot of interesting points to make about that while being silly.”

When asked if Ron Burgundy will get “a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington-esque moment to make a rallying cry,” McKay replied, “It’s been discussed, there’s a little wisp of [talk]. We’d never do it straight ahead, we gotta fuck with it in some way. Because Ron Burgundy isn’t quite Jimmy Stewart in character, so if he does, he’s not going to do it well. But there’s a little bit of that going on. I mean what is this 24-hour news, and this wall of white noise information, has it really been good for our country?”

He continued, “The great thing when you find a point of view like that is that it doesn’t have to be preachy or didactic, it’s also funny. It’s just funny that Americans have to contend with 2,000 channels, and 60 different specific news sources, and the confusion that it creates, and the junk that we get to see is hilarious. That’s what we’re always kinda looking for, what’s the point of view that’s got life to it and plays.”

At least McKay has some great help to bring this epic film to life. In addition to the original cast returning, the director and co-writer said he’d like to bring on even more fan-favorite supporting actors for cameo roles.

“We’re talking about for Anchorman 2 creating a murderer’s row of the best day players ever. Like, having every single one-line or three-line role, just be someone we just love,” McKay said. “Someone like Ian Roberts or Rob Huebel or Paula Killen — just making sure every day player is a home run.”

No word yet on when Anchorman 2 will hit theaters, but it’s been rumored that it could be out by Christmas 2013.
