This is "Went to Tell Somebody," where I spotlighted different cool independent comic book series based on submissions from the indie comic book creators themselves via a set Q & A with the creators themselves. Essentially, the creators speak for their own work and "Went to Tell Somebody" will give them a place to do so!

This is an ongoing weekly feature, so if you would like to see your work spotlighted, as well, there's no time limit or anything like that. So you can submit at any time. It's not a first come/first serve thing, ya know? Click here for the current submission guidelines.

Today we look at John Coats and James Coats' webseries, Dino-Beasts.

You can check out Dino-Beasts here.

What is your comic about?

John Coats and James Coats: Dino Beasts is a dinosaur-barbarian fantasy comic with humanoid dinosaur characters and a 1980s adventure-cartoon aesthetic.

What made you choose to use the comic book medium for this story?

JC & JC: As kids we were given copies of Usagi Yojimbo and Elfquest, and after that we were hooked on the comics medium for life. We love the visual storytelling possibilities that only comics can offer, and this has always been the medium within which we want to tell our stories.

What aspect of your comic are you most proud of?

JC & JC: Honestly, right now we are most proud of having just made a comic that we enjoy reading ourselves. It has taken lots of persistence, as James worked on the art while stationed in multiple countries and cities with the Air Force, and John moved around job searching after graduate school. But we are proud that we stuck with it and we are happy with the results.

What's the one piece of philosophy and/or advice that has informed your comic book work the most?

JC & JC: The philosophy we follow has come from our observations of really great comics, where narration and excessive "thought boxes" are basically non-existent. If there is an emotional reaction or internal struggle a character is having, then we want to show that visually and with the immediacy of actions, expressions, and direct word balloons. The power of comics is that its a visual medium, so our philosophy is to show everything you possibly can visually in an interesting manner. Its not always easy, but its worth the time to figure out how to do it.

Since this is "Went to Tell Everybody," tell everybody about another current comic book series that you would like other people to know more about.

JC & JC: Fantasy Sports by Sam Bosma is amazing. Its published in book volumes by Nobrow, so you won't find it on the weekly "floppies" shelf, but the art, action, drama, and heart in it are top notch.

Three volumes out so far with more coming. Think Miyazaki, D&D, and zany sports action mixed together. Just Brilliant.
