With the follow up to 2009’s wildly successful “Batman: Arkham Asylum” set to hit video game consoles later this year, DC Comics’ blog The Source has announced a comic tie-in to the highly anticipated “Batman: Arkham City.” The six-issue miniseries, which shares the “Arkham City” title, will tell the story of what happened in the world of the Caped Crusader between game storylines, leading directly into the sequel’s release in Fall 2011.
According to The Source, the comic will be written by Paul Dini, who also wrote both games, and will be illustrated by one of the games’ concept artists, Carlos D’anda. The Source also gives a glimpse into the story the comic will tell:
“BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY picks up one year after the original game, where former Arkham Warden turned newly elected Mayor of Gotham City Quincy Sharp has decided to close down the infamous institution. In its stead, he establishes ‘Arkham City,’ the new maximum security ‘home’ for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds. Â Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, inmates can roam free and do whatever they want as long as they don’t try to escape. To run this urban prison, Sharp has appointed Dr. Hugo Strange, a man who knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman.”
The series will be released in print and digital editions simultaneously for the same price of $2.99 per issue. Additionally, 8-page “interludes” will be available digitally for 99 cents, release between each full issue. The interludes will be included in the eventual collected edition of “Batman: Arkham City.”
According to DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee, “The digital first stories offer a unique incentive for fans to experience interesting and exciting stories beyond the pages in the printed comic. The additional pages will serve as interludes within the regular issues and won’t be necessary to follow the main story of the miniseries. Fans will also be able to read these interludes in print later, when we publish the collected edition.”
“Batman: Arkham Asylum” #1 and 2 hit stores and digital devices in May.
