Pokémon evolutions have usually been rather straightforward. They would simply evolve into bigger, fancier versions of themselves. Digimon evolutions are a bit more complicated than that. Each Digimon below the mega level is capable of digivolving into multiple different forms, and sometimes it makes zero sense how a Digimon changes from something like a plant to a bird.

Some digivolutions are so awful that there are memes poking fun at some of the digivolutions, depicting things like normal animals digivolving into household appliances. However, there are great digivolutions that deserve attention as well, some of which are iconic in the shows.

10 Makes No Sense: Sukamon To Etemon

etemon

Sukamon is a Digimon that is shaped like a golden poop. It has large square teeth, a long pink tongue, and two thin arms. When it attacks Mimi and Palmon, it hurls pink, miniature versions of itself. Undoubtedly, it is one of the ugliest Digimon in the franchise.

Shockingly it evolves into Etemon. In Digimon Adventure, Etemon is a monkey sporting black shades, constantly doing an Elvis impression. As silly as he is, no one would expect one of the biggest villains in the series to digivolve from talking poop.

9 Perfect: MetalGreymon To WarGreymon

Wargreymon Raising its claws as MetalGreymon Roars

MetalGreymon is a combination of a dragon and a cyborg. It is a large Ultimate Digimon that is capable of attacking with missiles and fire blasts from its mouth. It only makes sense that WarGreymon looks like an upgraded version of MetalGreymon. WarGreymon's smaller size makes him faster, and the metal armor now covers more of his body. WarGreymon still has the same hair, horns, and claws as MetalGreymon, making it easy for fans to believe that this is a superior and natural digivolution.

8 Makes No Sense: Gatomon To Angewomon

Gatomon Digivolving Into Angewomon

Gatomon, despite being the size of a rookie-level Digimon, is actually at the Champion level. Despite being a holy Digimon, it certainly does not look like one. When Digivolving into her Ultimate form, Gatomon becomes Angewomon, a humanoid Digimon that looks like an angel with a helmet over her head.

Changing from a cat with big green gloves to a delicate looking angel is a huge stretch. Angemon, who is perceived as Angewomon's counterpart in the series, is only at the champion level, which adds to the confusion.

7 Perfect: DemiDevimon To Devimon

DemiDevimon And Devimon looking downwards menacingly

DemiDevimon is a round, bat-like creature with large claws and a skull shape on its forehead. In both appearance and personality, it is a devilish trickster who uses pranks and mind games to get its way. Devimon shows what kind of creature DemiDevimon can be once it actually has power.

Devimon has the same bat wings, skull decorations, and face covering that DemiDevimon has. Most importantly, it has the same level of cunning, in addition to greater strength. It's a natural progression from a trickster to a more sinister villain.

6 Makes No Sense: Greymon To Vademon

Greymon is an iconic face of Digimon, resembling a horned T-Rex who can shoot fireballs from its mouth. However, if fans of the show saw him digivolve into Vademon, they would probably be left confused and dissatisfied. No one would want to see a huge, powerful dragon change into a Digimon resembling a stereotypical alien with a pulsating brain and a ray gun.

Dragons and aliens simply don't mix, and there is no way Tai or Masaru would be thrilled with having a dead-eyed monster following them around on tentacle-like feet.

5 Perfect: Infermon to Diaboromon

Infermon staring while Diaboromon fights WarGreymon

Both Infermon and Diaboromon were depicted as a virus in Digimon: The Movie. They both look the part: Infermon has the body of a spider, sporting long legs and beady eyes with only malice behind them.

Diaboromon has arms that closely resemble Infermon's legs, and has the same horns on its body. Neither Digimon look friendly, and their attacks are the same: merciless blasts shot from their mouths. Fans do not question this digivolution because this villain is a terrifying threat in both forms.

4 Makes No Sense: Yokomon To Biyomon

Yokomon is a Digimon that resembles a plant. It has a bulbous pink body, tentacle-like feet, and a blue flower atop its head. Strangely, when this plant digivolves, it becomes a Biyomon, a bird type of Digimon.

They have the same pink and blue colors on their bodies, but the similarities end there. Biyomon has wings, bird talons, feathers, and a beak. These are all things that plants don't have. If fans did not see Sora's Yokomon digivolve in the series, no one would have ever guessed that the two Digimon are related.

3 Perfect: Gaomon To Gaogamon

Gaomon is Thomas Norstein's partner in Digimon Data Squad. He appears to be a blue dog standing on two legs, with a red headband and red punching gloves. When he digivolves to Gaogamon, he walks on four legs. However, major design elements have not changed.

His headband is now attached to the white fur around his neck, he's still blue, and his punching gloves are still there, albeit with claws added to them. In both designs, it's clear that these Digimon use their front paws to attack their enemies.

2 Makes No Sense: SnowAgumon To Frigimon

SnowAgumon running as Frigimon flexes

There is actually a Digimon that looks similar to Agumon, called SnowAgumon. The major difference between the two is that SnowAgumon is white and knows different attacks. If this isn't surprising enough, SnowAgumon is capable of digivolving into Frigimon.

Frigimon is a Digimon that resembles both a bear and a snowman, and it attacks using fists rather than claws. Although SnowAgumon and Frigimon both have ice attacks, this digivolution of a small dinosaur into a snow bear makes little sense.

1 Perfect: Antylamon To Cherubimon

Cherubimon and Antylamon fighting the digidestined

Despite looking like a rabbit, Antylamon manages to look rather menacing. It is tall enough to tower over humans, doesn't have a visible mouth, and has a spine that curves, leaving the creature hunched over most of the time.

It digivolves into Cherubimon, which keeps these features but now has a mouth that is usually grinning menacingly. Its expressions and dark purple hue make Cherubimon look eviler than its prior form, but for a villain that was toying with the heroes in Digimon: The Movie, it's a perfect Digivolution.
