Despite being a children's animeDigimon does a solid job of portraying its characters with a nuance that just isn't as common in other series like it. The show is known for its redemption arcs, which tend to happen at least once a season, and which have taken several of the anime's villains and turned them into heroes.

Of course, certain Digimon redemptions are more thought-out than others. While some characters are quick to change their tune, others take more time -- and more convincing -- before they see the error of their ways.

Here are 10 of the best redemptions from Digimon.

10 Antylamon

In Digimon Tamers, Antylamon does go from being one of the villains to one of the heroes, meaning she does have a change of heart somewhere along the line. That came in the form of Suzie's arrival in the Digital World.

Although Antylamon changes her mind about humans thanks to Suzie, however, it doesn't take much convincing -- and fans never really see the Deva Digimon do anything that horrible to begin with. While Antylamon's redemption is an important one, it's also the weakest on this list.

9 Gatomon

Gatomon first appears in Digimon Adventure as one of Myotismon's flunkies, but it soon becomes evident that there's more to her character. After she meets Kari, it's revealed that she's the Digimon of the eighth DigiDestined Myotismon has been searching for -- and from there, she becomes an official member of the team.

It's great that Gatomon turns to the "good side," but her redemption arc isn't so much an arc as it is an episode. While it's important enough to be in the top 10, it certainly could have used a bit more fleshing out.

8 Ogremon

In Digimon Adventure, fans first meet Ogremon as one of Devimon's henchmen. Unlike his rival, Leomon, Ogremon seems eager to do the villain's bidding -- and it's only later that he resurfaces and changes his attitude toward the DigiDestined.

Comically, he won't admit to actually liking the group. But his actions toward the tail end of the season prove he does, and they mostly make up for his earlier indiscretions. Ogremon's redemption is lighthearted, which is why it's so far down on this list, but in a way, it's refreshing that he doesn't dwell on the past as so many other former villains do.

7 Wizardmon

Wizardmon's redemption is similar to Gatomon's, likely because his allegiance is to Gatomon first and foremost. Wizardmon is another one of Myotismon's lackeys, but once Gatomon is revealed to be the eighth Digimon, he's quick to switch sides.

It's almost difficult to even call Wizardmon's arc a redemption one, as his character is never particularly inclined toward evil to begin with. He does, however, make up for serving Myotismon by sacrificing himself in the end -- and that action lands him above his friend Gatomon and several others on this list.

6 Oikawa

Oikawa seems to be calling the shots in Digimon Adventure 2, but it's later revealed that Myotismon is possessing him. Once the evil Digimon is purged from him, Oikawa realizes the horrible things he's done and is distraught.

And even with the little strength he has left, Oikawa manages to redeem himself in a pretty grand way: He sacrifices what's left of himself in order to rebuild the Digital World. While it would have been interesting to see more of Oikawa before he did this, his is definitely one of the most important redemptions, if only for its overall impact on the anime's characters and setting.

5 Apollomon

Apollomon

Apollomon starts off Digimon Fusion as a Dark General, a role he falls into accidentally at first. Unfortunately, his possession by Whispered turns him into a genuinely cruel Digimon -- at least until he regains some control and convinces the Fusion Fighters United Army to destroy him.

Apollomon's willingness to accept his own demise as the price for doing what's right is admirable, and it's part of what makes his redemption so strong. As far as Digimon redemptions go, it's also unique to see a decent character feigning being evil, then finally falling prey to that act.

4 Koichi Kimura

The existence of Koji's twin brother on Digimon Frontier comes as a surprise to both him and the viewers, and what's more shocking is that he's been brainwashed by the season's real villain, Cherubimon.

Although he's not technically responsible for his behavior, Koichi does attempt to make up for it -- to the point where he nearly dies protecting his friends. Watching him struggle with his own demons makes for a truly compelling storyline that's hard not to empathize with, and his willingness to sacrifice his own life is as powerful as Apollomon's (more so, since humans aren't normally reborn).

3 BlackWarGreymon

BlackWarGreymon's existential crisis is one of the most fascinating subplots of Digimon Adventure 2. Created by Arukenimon to destroy the Digital World, BlackWarGreymon turns out to be much harder to control than her previous Dark Tower Digimon. Unfortunately, he still sets out on a destructive warpath -- only seeing the error of his ways after many lectures from other Digimon.

And BlackWarGreymon never fully redeems himself, but that's part of what makes his redemption so compelling. He does sacrifice himself in an attempt to protect the Digital World, but it almost feels too little, too late. His transition is more complex than most, and he remains firmly in that morally grey area from beginning to end -- which, honestly, is more interesting.

2 Ken

When the Digimon Emperor is introduced during Digimon Adventure 2, it's hard to imagine him being a normal kid -- much less one who might redeem himself before the season is through. As the season's major villain, Ken genuinely seems to enjoy seeing Digimon in pain. It's later revealed that he believed the entire thing to be a game, and that the Dark Spore inside him brought out his worst tendencies.

Still, Ken is responsible for a lot of suffering while he's the Digimon Emperor, and he goes to great lengths to rectify that in whatever ways he can during the latter half of the season. His redemption is one of the most fleshed-out ones, with a clear backstory and a struggle to improve.

1 Beelzemon

Impmon's resentment toward the DigiDestined seems comical at the beginning of Digimon Tamers, but it eventually becomes clear he'll do anything to Digivolve like them. That includes making questionable deals with bad Digimon, so, when Impmon does finally Digivolve, he's forced to repay Caturamon by attempting to destroy the Tamers and their Digimon.

When it comes to wrongdoing, Beelzemon probably goes the furthest of all the characters on this list. In the end, he does make peace with his faults, helping save Jeri and mending his relationship with his own Tamers. From his motivations to do evil to his reasoning for improving himself, Beelzemon's redemption is the most believable of the bunch -- and thus, the easiest to get invested in.
