The following article contains spoilers for Digimon Ghost Game through Episode 38 "The Diviner," streaming now on Crunchyroll.

Before the beginning of Digimon Ghost Game, many Digimon were unwillingly transported to the real world without warning. With the notable exception of BlackTailmon Uver, these Digimon were unable to cross back into their own world. In their efforts to adapt to their new environment, many of these Digimon began wreaking havoc and causing events that seemed supernatural but ultimately were digital in nature. Therefore, most of the team's encounters ended peacefully, with the team helping these Digimon understand the real world and integrate better into their surroundings.

However, Digimon Ghost Game seems to be in the middle of a narrative shift. In many of the past few episodes, the focus of Digimon Ghost Game has leaned more toward the incorporation of supernatural elements from the real world with Digimon themselves. The series has already confirmed the existence of ghosts and possibly werewolves not connected with Digimon at all. This narrative shift could have larger implications for the series as a whole, possibly indicating that it will end with the Digital world and the real world fully merged.

Sepikmon plays with spirits in Digimon Ghost Game

The first episode to truly confirm the existence of human ghosts in the world of Digimon Ghost Game was Episode 33 "Whispers of the Dead." In this episode, Kiyoshiro Higashimitarai almost died and in the process, attracted the attention of Sepikmon, a Digimon who could only befriend the dead. After Sepikmon tried to kill Kiyoshiro multiple times because he wanted a human friend, Jellymon was able to save Kiyoshiro. Notably, the team took Sepikmon to a graveyard so that he could befriend the human spirits there. The reveal that ghosts are real was understated, but it clearly opened the door for more actual paranormal entities not connected with the digital world.

After this reveal, the lines between Digimon and the real world/supernatural one began to blur even more. In Episode 35 "Werewolf," Manticoremon absorbed data about a werewolf legend that led him to believe that he was the werewolf. In the legend, a werewolf terrorized a small village every century until they sacrificed a moon maiden from the Tsukiyono family to the wolf.

While visiting the village, Ruli Tsukiyono had a vision that revealed there actually was a werewolf, but the legend itself was a lie. The werewolf and a moon maiden had fallen in love in the past, and the townspeople accidentally murdered the moon maiden when trying to kill the werewolf. While Ruli's vision was important for confirming that werewolves are real in Digimon Ghost Game, the vision also showed that humans can have supernatural abilities as well, opening up more room for future stories.

Doumon possessed on Digimon Ghost Game

The strongest case for the supernatural more clearly affecting Digimon can be seen in Episode 38 "The Diviner." In this episode, Doumon was possessed by spirits from the Hojo clan who were determined to reestablish their shogunate by raising a spirit army. Doumon used Hiro Amanokawa as a vessel for the young lord of the clan, but Gammamon was able to save both Hiro and Doumon with the help of Espimon. Doumon's possession shows that the supernatural entities of the real world can use Digimon as conduits for their own purposes. Doumon and Hiro's actual possession by human spirits shows that Digimon and humans can both be affected by the real world's supernatural entities in similar ways, proving that humans and Digimon are even more alike than previously shown.

Overall, while this new narrative trend does show an increased focus on the real world's paranormal entities, this blending also means that the Digimon and the real world are becoming more and more intrinsically intertwined. The series could end with an attempt to send the Digimon back to the digital world. However, as the Digimon become more adapted to the real world, it may become harder for them to simply be transported back home. Therefore, this merging of the worlds could also indicate that the series might end with the digital and real worlds becoming even more entangled, for better or for worse, or with the two worlds totally combining once and for all.
