The first teaser trailer has been released for Digimon Ghost Game.
The short video showcases the first fully animated clips from the upcoming Digimon anime. The trailer introduces the series' new protagonist, Hiro Amanokawa, and his new partner Digimon, Gammamon. The video also provides short glimpses as this season's other Digimon tamers, as well as some of the monstrous Digimon that they will probably end up fighting against. The trailer ends with what looks like the beginning of Gammamon's digivolution sequence, but ends before showing what the small Digimon evolves into.
The first details about Digimon Ghost Game's story were revealed several days ago, ahead of the release of this trailer. The show will focus on Hiro, a middle school student enrolled in Hazakura Academy. Hiro will be voiced by Mutsumi Tamura, who previously played the role of Koizumi Izumi (known as Izzy in the original English dub,) in Digimon Adventure. Gammamon, Hiro's Digimon partner, will be voiced by legendary voice actor Miyuki Sawashiro, who has previously starred in anime such as Durarara!! and Sword Art Online, and has also played the role of Fujiko Mine in some of the more recent Lupin the Third anime series and movies.
The Digimon franchise began when Bandai released the original Digimon virtual pet toy in 1997, which was followed up by the release of the original Digimon anime in 1999. The original Digimon Adventure anime series told the story of a group of young children who were suddenly transported to the digital world, an alternate dimension that exists inside of our digital devices. The series was one of the first examples of the isekai anime genre to be broadcast on TV in the United States and Canada. While the series was initially dismissed as a clone of Nintendo's Pokemon, which had debuted in the United States just a year before the anime, the series eventually found a dedicated audience who appreciated its more serious tone and serialized storytelling. The anime series was one of the first televised works from director Mamoru Hosoda, who would later go on to helm critically acclaimed anime films such as Summer Wars, the Academy Award nominated Mirai and the recently released Belle. A remake of the series premiered in 2020 and is scheduled to end its broadcast run this September, shortly before the release of the new series.
Digimon Ghost Game will premiere in Japan this October. Details regarding an international release in other territories have yet to be announced. The 2020 reboot of Digimon Adventure is available for streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
