WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 3 of Digimon Adventure 2020, "And To The Digital World," streaming now on Crunchyroll.

Last week, fans of the original Digimon series were thrown through a loop when the caped figure of Omnimon burst into battle. The fusion of two Mega Digvolutions, Omnimon's arrival seemed shockingly premature considering that we're still in the origin phase of the franchise's new era. But it certainly doesn't overstay its welcome. In Digimon Adventure 2020's third episode, the warrior's entry is followed by an equally swift exit, leaving in its wake the chance for the series to get back to more familiar territory for older fans. Yes -- pack your bag and grab those goggles because this week, we're going back to summer camp!

Inside the Network, Omnimon, the Vaccine Digimon, makes short work of the Mutant/Virus attributed Argomon, a Digimon that -- much likes its possible genetic forebear, Diaboromon -- infiltrated the technology of the real world in order to send an American nuke in Tokyo's direction. With Tai and Matt (Taichi and Yamato) on its shoulders, the knightly Digimon then utilizes their combined power of friendship and courage to redirect the warhead so that it can detonate in the planet's stratosphere. Tai and Matt are then sent back to the real world and left to wonder, like Lewis Carroll's Alice, if their trip to Wonderland was some kind of dream.

Normalcy resumes when Tai and Izzy (Koshiro) remember that camp beckons, and it's a shared feeling that a certain swathe of the audience will similarly be happy to sink back into with them. The first two episodes of this reboot have served as a fun but disorientating reintroduction to a show that many will be returning to after an extended leave of absence. Now, we're back where it all began in the very first episode of the very first series: a group of kids showing up to a camp in the woods with no idea that they're about to be sucked into an epic adventure.

But even as things appear to slip into a familiar groove -- here comes Sora! -- it becomes clear that we're still not in back in Kansas just yet. Towards Episode 3's end, Tai is, right on cue, pulled back into the Digital World (in more greener pastures, this time) and is welcomed by Agumon again. At the same time, another rogue Digimon stirs in the Network and attacks Tokyo's power grid, causing a city-wide blackout. It's a fair assumption to make that, in spite of what the episode's title promises, we won't see the DigiDestined trapped for an indefinite amount of time in the virtual realm; instead, the door between worlds looks like it'll be more of a revolving one.

Fans may still have mixed feelings about this new series' approach but the important thing to keep in mind is that we're firmly in reboot not remake territory. Keeping the Digital and real worlds closely linked lends this current series a more grounded underpinning, one that should open up new possibilities for character development and storytelling.
