WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the first episode of Digimon Adventure 2020streaming now on Crunchyroll.

Snap those goggles to your forehead and grab your DigiVice because the original DigiDestined are back -- and in original, child-sized forms, at that. Rather than a straight, shot-for-shot remake, however, Digimon Adventure 2020's first episode is a big departure from its source material, save for the all-important first meeting between Tai and Agumon (or Koromon, in his In-Traning form), a fateful introduction that appears much the same as you might remember it. It's also a scene that recalls a certain continuity problem caused by the first Digimon movie.

Rather than meeting his soon-to-be-teammates in summer camp and being sucked into the Digital World together, the new series keeps the gang separated to begin with -- save for Tai and Izzy. When investigating a runaway train carrying his mom and sister, Kari, Tai is instead dropped into "the Network," leaving Izzy in the physical world to work in tandem with his transported new friend.

It's while falling down this virtual rabbit-hole that Tai encounters Koromon, who is also tumbling down with him. In the original first episode, the Digimon's pink, head-only form is the one to welcome Tai into this strange new world. Somehow, Koromon already knows Tai's name, which we could chalk up to their mystical bond, telling the surprised child that he's been "waiting for him." Koromon, among the other six Digmon partnered with Tai's human friends, later Digivolves in his Rookie form, Agumon, to battle Kuwagamon.

Where things got a little muddled, however, was with the release of Digmon: The Movie after the first Digimon Adventure series ended. The first in this collection of shorts from Japan was set eight years before we first met Tai and Kari in the show, and included their first meeting with Koromon. Or, at least, a Koromon. This Digimon, which the siblings rear themselves from Egg to Champion form in their own shared bedroom in the real world, struggles to speak at first -- unlike the Koromon that Tai later encounters. As Greymon, it ends up saving their neighborhood from being destroyed by Parrotmon, before being transported back home.

Considering that an aged-up Tai doesn't have a clue who Koromon is in the original series, this prequel sequence created a bit of a plot hole in retrospect. A possible explanation is that Tai could have been too young to remember meeting the creature, and perhaps even thought the memory was simply a weird, childhood dream. In Digimon Adventure 2020, Tai seems similarly uncertain about who the peachy blob before him is, but there are some clues that it could indeed be the Koromon he previously encountered in the movie.

When they meet, Koromon Digivolves right away into Agumon, evidence perhaps of an already-established, strong bond, and this Agumon has the confidence to jump instantly into battle, too, much like the fearsome version we saw in the movie. But Agumon also tells Tai that he's "glad they've finally met," a line which, frustratingly, leaves room for interpretation either way.

The first episode is very action-heavy, so it's possible their conversation might be revisited once the drama has died down. Digimon fans will doubtless be even more pleased with this new reboot if it can finally iron-out a 20-year-old timeline wrinkle.
