WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 9 of Digimon Adventure 2020"The Ultimate Digimon Attacks," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The latest episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot finally reunites Izzy with the rest of the DigiDestined -- Tai, Sora, Mimi, Joe and the recently resurfaced Matt -- in the Digital World. Izzy had been keeping tabs on the real world from the nebulous Network, a world between worlds, as Japan continues to be plunged into chaos by interference from the Digital World.

He arrives just in time for himself and his new friends, along with their Digimon partners, to be caught in the biggest battle of the season so far when Devimon sends an Ultimate level monster after them. Clearly outgunned, the kids suddenly find an unexpected ally in another recently defeated enemy: Ogremon.

Up until now, the DigiDestined/Chosen Ones have had little trouble making their way through the Digital World. This is entirely due to their innate connection to their Digimon, using their bonds to power the creatures up to the Champion level to combat the rogue Digimon that have stood in their way of progressing toward the Holy Digimon. This includes Ogremon, a Champion level hunter who clashed with Greymon and Togemon on Devimon's orders in Episode 6. Safe to say that the kids were overdue a more significant obstacle to up the stakes.

That obstacle appears, initially, to be Ogremon, who shows up at the fortress the group just successfully sieged looking to get even with Tai and Agumon. In their last fight, Greymon snapped one of the demonic Digimon's horns off. Showing a surprising level of depth, Ogremon explains -- in his limited speech -- that horn equals "pride." Therefore, this rematch is less about revenge or evil for evil's sake and more about recapturing his lost honor as a warrior. What Tai and the gang don't know is that Ogremon has come fresh from a dressing-down from his master, with Devimon dismissing his righthand man as ineffective, causing Ogremon to shake with frustration.

This more nuanced characterization isn't something the antagonist was afforded in the original incarnation of the series. Instead, it was given to Leomon the "Noble Hero," Devimon's other main henchman and rival to Ogremon. But as Ogremon tussles once more with Greymon in Episode 9 of the 2020 series, his replacement turns up to completely change the playing field: MetalTyrannomon. The Tyrannomon species serves as a sort of dark foil to Agumon's and, fittingly, the Ultimate level Digimon stops Tai's Greymon in his tracks from Digivolving to its level, breaking his concentration with a single, powerful swipe.

With Agumon out of commission, the rest of the group can only cower in fear of MetalTyrannomon's Godzilla-like rampage around them, turning the fortress into fiery rubble. This is when Ogremon decides to intervene, using his Pummel Whack to carve an escape path out for the DigiDestined and instructing them to use it while he keeps MetalTyrannomon busy. It seems that Ogremon, underneath all that green skin and teeth, has real heart and soul. Clearly, he doesn't want Greymon to lose to anyone else but him, but he also indicates he's taking Devimon's betrayal personally -- and wants to make amends.

It's unclear how Devimon, a villain who is only at the Champion level himself, has been able to wrangle a technically superior Digimon to his cause, but the fact that he has is a pretty ominous statement.
