WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 67 of Digimon Adventure 2020, "The End of the Adventure," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

After over a year of virtually uninterrupted airing, the Digimon Adventure reboot has come to an end. Episode 67, fittingly titled "The End of the Adventure," sees Taichi, Yamato, their partner Digimon, Agumon and Gabumon, and the rest of the DigiDestined make one last push to take down the villainous Negamon, an entity bent on not just wholesale destruction, but the total erasure of all existence. Even the real world isn't safe.

Defeating it requires the reveal of one final -- and also "Final"  -- form from Omnimon, itself the fusion form of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, the Mega-evolved versions of Agumon and Gabumon. Though a predictable twist, it's still a thoroughly satisfying and visually spectacular battle, followed by an epilogue that's far more positive than the original series was. Here's how Digimon Adventure 2020 wraps up, and what you need to know about Omnimon Alter-S and Negamon.

Negamon's Final Form and Plan For the Digital World

Prophecized as "The Great Catastrophe," Negamon hatched in Episode 64 and goes on to quickly beef itself up by draining data from across the Digital and real world from its home in the Network, the nebulous realm between the two. Though never given a name until recently, it's had an almost unseen influence on the series from the start, using the gang's first antagonist in the Digital World -- Algomon -- as its pawn, and later, Nidhoggmon, to push the kids to their limit. Even Devimon was really a puppet of Negamon. This comes back to hurt Negamon, however, as the "spirit" of Devimon that lingers on within Angemon (Takeru's partner with whom it shares a genetic link) ends up siding with the very children who defeated Devimon.

All of this shadowy plotting laid the groundwork for Negamon's arrival, and its many eyes are fixed on one terrible goal. All Digimon are part of a neverending cycle of rebirth -- their data simply being 'reborn' as another egg (Digitama) when they die. Negamon wants to end this cycle by consuming everything, both human and Digimon, until all that remains is a void where reality used to be. After evolving to Abbdomon and briefly absorbing every Chosen One except Taichi, Yamato, Hikari, Takeru and their Mega-level Digimon, the group is able to prevent themselves from being entirely digested, reemerging with a renewed vigor in Episode 67 to defeat Abbdomon's outer body.

Meanwhile, Taichi, Matt and Omnimon attack Abbdomon from the inside. There, they fight a humanoid knight that looks like Omnimon's evil twin, known as Abbdomon Core. Like Omnimon, it comes equipped with powerful weapons -- a spear on one arm and a sword on the other, while each of its multiple eyes can fire deadly lasers, much like a Beholder from Dungeons & Dragons. If that weren't enough, its very touch causes severe decay, which is what forces Omnimon to upgrade.

Omnimon Alter-S, Explained

Though not new to the franchise, the finale of Digimon Adventure 2020 is the first time Omnimon Alter-S has appeared in the anime. It's not too visually different from Omnimon's usual form, but much like its component Digimons' Slide forms (MetalGreymon Alterous Mode and WereGarurumon Sagittarius Mode), Alter-S draws from BlitzGreymon and CresGarurumon (MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon's alternate Mega forms) to amp up its weapons. The former gives it a huge plasma cannon while the latter arms it with an even bigger sword, which is apparently capable of cutting anything and everything.

Its manifestation is undoubtedly the "miracle" that Valkyrimon spoke of, proven by Omnimon Alter-S making easy work of the unsuspecting Abbdomon Core. But as a Holy Warrior, Omnimon Alter-S's final judgment is a merciful one, reminding the villain before it's totally vanquished that all Digimon have the chance to become good, bad or something beyond that binary trapping in each of their new lives, bidding it farewell until they meet again.

What Happens to the Chosen Ones In the Digimon Adventure 2020 Finale

Fans expecting a tearful parting of the DigiDestined and their beloved Digimon after the final villain's defeat, as was the case in the original series, are spared this hardship in Digimon Adventure 2020. While it appears, at first, that Taichi, Yamato, Koshiro, Joe, Mimi, Sora, Takeru and Hikari have to return to the human world alone, it soon becomes apparent by their not-so-conspicuous hiding places (Gabumon hilariously looks like a child in a trenchcoat) that they're not alone. Somehow, enough blurring of the dimensional barriers has occurred to allow their Digimon to stay by their sides in the real world.

And there's even a hint that their adventure isn't actually over: Koshiro -- who appears to have set up shop next to Mimi's new business by the end -- is shown to have established a Digital Gate, bridging the Digital and real worlds without the Network. On the other side, Taichi and Agumon are hanging out, with the series ending on the pair heading off to explore more of the mysterious world. Sure, it's cheesy and formulaic, but nostalgic viewers wouldn't want a series that's built on the magic of friendship to end any other way.
