The most wonderful time of the year brought out a theatrical re-release of Die Hard, which managed to crack the top 10 biggest movies at the domestic box office over the weekend.

According to Box Office Guru, Die Hard returned to 1,172 locations this weekend and grossed $189,000 for a per-theater average of $161. That put Die Hard in ninth place for the weekend, narrowly edging out the $180,000 14th weekend haul of Tenet.

While Bruce Willis might not think Die Hard is a Christmas movie, the theatrical success suggests that audiences disagree. With new theatrical releases still scarce due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, movie studios have taken to theatrically re-releasing older titles. Die Hard distributor Disney has been especially fervent in this endeavor, having theatrically re-released the likes of Frozen, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Santa Clause all within the last month.

Die Hard was originally released in theaters in July 1988 and scored positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Grossing $141.5 million worldwide, the film birthed Bruce Willis as an action movie star and spawned a whole new franchise. Since the original Die Hard, four sequels have been produced while a sixth entry, tentatively entitled MacLane, is in development.

Directed by John McTiernan and starring Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov, Reginald VelJohnson and Bonnie Bedelia, Die Hard is now playing in select theaters.
