In addition to her previous action movie roles in Mad Max: Fury Road and The Old Guard, Charlize Theron is all in for the chance to do a gender-flipped, queer Die Hard film.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Theron was asked about a previous Twitter post she retweeted commenting on the desire to see a Die Hard "where Charlize Theron goes on a rampage to save her wife." On whether she'd accept that role if given the chance, she responded, "Yeah, I mean, it's a great idea. That's why I replied on Twitter. Because I just thought that was kind of brilliant. I was like, 'This person needs to start pitching. That's a great idea.' And the fact that it would be two women, I was like, 'Yeah, sign me on.'"

Theron has already played a variation of this theoretical Die Hard reboot character in 2017's Atomic Blonde as MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton. Though it's established through flashbacks that she had a relationship with deceased agent James Gascoigne, the movie's B-plot involved Lorainne meeting and forming a romantic relationship with French agent Delphine Lasalle during her mission in Berlin. Similarly, while Netflix's The Old Guard has yet to confirm it, the relationship between Theron's Andromache/Andy and her first immortal companion Quynh (named Noriko in the comics) were a romantic item according to their Image Comics source material.

Die Hard, which released in 1988, revolutionized the action genre for swapping out the decade-defining über-muscular protagonist with John McClane (Bruce Willis), an ordinary NYPD officer who must singlehandedly save his wife and colleagues from a group of thieves posing as terrorists, led by Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber. The film transformed Willis into an action star, produced four sequels and spawned countless movie imitators featuring protagonists created in McClane's likeness. However, following negative reception towards 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard, Willis' last Die Hard-related appearance has been as a parody of himself in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.

Theron's next film, F9, will see the actor reprise her role as Fast and the Furious antagonist Cipher. Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel and Sung Kang, with Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron and Cardi B. The film arrives in theaters May 28.
