Dick Tracy: Archie Comics Is Rebooting Chester Gould’s Classic Character

It’s been a long time since yellow-coated detective Dick Tracy ruled comics, but he’s coming back in a big way thanks to a new series from Archie Comics.

The series, announced via The Hollywood Reporter, is co-written by Alex Segura and Michael Moreci, the former of whom is co-president of Archie Comics. Thomas Pitilli will be handling artwork; he previously illustrated covers for Archie’s Riverdale comic.

“The term ‘dream come true’ is a painful cliche, but also extremely accurate in this situation,” Segura told THR, a notion echoed by Moreci, who added, “I’m still pinching myself over this. I can’t believe this is really happening. To have an opportunity to contribute to this tremendous legacy is an honor and a thrill, and I’m so lucky to be working with Alex, Tom and Archie. Alex is a friend and a great writer, and Tom is an artist of boundless talent. I think we’re doing something special here, and I can’t wait to take readers on a fun, wild ride for, hopefully, years to come.”

Created by cartoonist Chester Gould, Dick Tracy first appeared in a 1931 edition of the Detroit Mirror newspaper. Gould worked on the comic strip until 1977. The new comic series, written by Alex Segura and Michael Moreci, with art by Thomas Pitilli and covers by Francesco Francavilla, arrives in comic stores April 11.
