Diablo IV is in many ways a recall of the past entries in the Diablo series and a return to form in tone and atmosphere. However, that doesn't mean that Blizzard is done innovating. One of the best ways Diablo IV expands on the traditional action RPG gameplay that it's known for is with its World Boss mechanic. This raid boss concept is one that is new to the Diablo franchise but has been recently seen in another, perhaps unlikely series: Pokémon.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Tera Raids introduced new, super strong Pokémon that allowed up to four players to join forces against them. Similarly, Diablo IV's World Bosses are incredibly powerful boss monsters that can be taken down with up to 12 players fighting collaboratively. If the success of Scarlet & Violet's Tera Raids is any indication, World Bosses can potentially provide a most welcome change to the classic RPG franchise.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Tera Raid Battles Are a Welcome Change

Starting in Pokémon Sword & Shield, players were introduced to Dynamax Raids, a gameplay mode that allowed four players to team up in order to take on a larger-than-life Dynamaxed Pokémon. In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, this mechanic was expanded on and perfected, leading to the exceedingly difficult 7-Star Tera Raids that keep players coming back for more.

Adding these Raid Boss battles to Pokémon changed the game in various ways. For one, it offered players another way to enjoy the post-game aside from PvP battles. Additionally, it allowed players to join together in co-op for the first time while also requiring a different form of strategy in contrast to traditional battles.

Diablo IV's new World Boss concept has seen an overwhelmingly positive response from fans after the game’s Open Beta weekend. The unparalleled size and strength of the World Boss, coupled with the sheer number of other players that can fight alongside each other gave players a feeling of being part of a truly epic battle on a scale never before seen in Diablo. Following the Open Beta, the internet was flooded with videos of players taking on Ashava the Pestalint, often to mixed results, but always with enthusiasm.

Of course being that Diablo IV is still in its beta stage, the World Boss encounters did not occur without issues. For one, World Boss battles in their current form have no level limit. Raids would often end up being filled with lower-level players who strongly hurt the chances of victory for the higher-level players. Also, there were reportedly several instances of the bosses not spawning according to their scheduled times. However, even with these minor hiccups, Diablo's first World Boss experiment proved to be one of the highlights of the Beta.

Even in the most well-established franchises, the addition of Raid Bosses can add to late-game replay value, as well as give players a unique challenge to test themselves in contrast to the traditional mechanics. Additionally, Raid Bosses can provide players with new incentives, such as the Legendary items dropped by World Bosses in Diablo IV or the Tera Shards and Herba Mystica dropped by Tera Raid Pokémon.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Tera Raids were a simple change that added a new sense of challenge and community to a classic game franchise. Similarly, Diablo IV's World Bosses prove how MMO concepts can fit perfectly into the Diablo format, contrary to what Diablo Immortal may have made players believe. If Diablo IV can continue to follow in its fellow RPG's footsteps upon release, its new World Boss mechanic will help the game's community enjoy a sense of consistent interest over time, just as Scarlet & Violet's Raid Bosses have.
