Michael C. Hall, star of the crime drama Dexter, detailed what prompted his return to the character seven years after the series finale.

In October of 2020 it was announced that Hall would be reprising his popular role as the bloodstain pattern analyst Dexter Morgan, who uses his proximity to police investigations to get away with murder, in a 10-episode limited series. Hall spoke with NME about the revival, saying, "I’m looking forward to getting back into Dexter’s shoes. I don’t really know what to expect, as I’ve never returned to a job after so much time. Having Dexter in a completely different context, we’ll see how that feels. It’s been interesting to figure out how to do that and I thought it was time to find out what the hell happened to him."

The revival will reportedly continue where the finale left off after the cornered Dexter faked his death and fled his hunting grounds of Miami for the northern United States.

When asked whether it took much to convince him to revive the eponymous vigilante serial killer, Hall said, "I just needed the persuasion of time passing, so I could [get] some distance away from that part and have more possibilities for him. Really, it was about being presented with a story I felt was worth telling. There had been some other proposals and possibilities for Dexter, other roads we started down, but this was the first one that was worth continuing on."

Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, the series ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013. On the date that it aired, the series finale was viewed by 2.8 million households, the largest overall audience in Showtime's history. Despite the size of the audience, the series finale was widely considered disappointing. Hall has previously discussed how he hopes the upcoming mini-series will make up for fans being unhappy with the controversial ending.

Hall will be joining several familiar collaborators from the original series including Dexter's former showrunner, Clyde Phillips. Also returning is Marcos Siega, who helmed nine episodes of the original series, and who will direct 6 episodes of the revival which is set to premiere some time in late 2021.

Created by Clyde Phillips, Dexter stars Michael C. Hall, Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah and Jack Alcott. Showtime's revival series has yet to receive a premiere date.
