Showtime has shared the first official promo for its upcoming limited series revival of the popular 2000s crime drama Dexter. The teaser was posted to the official Dexter on Showtime Twitter account alongside the caption, "Nature is calling." The video sees an ax stuck in a log while a fire burns in the background. Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan narrates, stating, "There really is nothing like getting back to nature... my nature." The promo then fades out to the Dexter logo, which is written in blood against the backdrop of white snow.RELATED: Dexter's Michael C. Hall Explains Why He Signed on for the Revival

Based on the 2004 novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter originally premiered on Showtime in 2006, running for a total of eight seasons and concluding in 2013. The show follows Dexter Morgan, a forensic technician for the Miami Metro Police Department. Dexter leads a secret life as a vigilante serial killer, hunting down other murderers who managed to sidestep the justice system.

While the first four seasons of Dexter were met with universal acclaim, the latter four were more heavily criticized. The 2013 series finale -- often referred to as the "lumberjack ending" -- was especially controversial among fans and critics alike at the time of its release. In it, Dexter fakes his own death and goes into hiding as a lumberjack in Oregon.

In October of 2020, Showtime announced that it would be reviving Dexter for a 10-episode limited series, with Hall reprising the eponymous role and various newcomers joining the cast. Production on the revival began in February of this year, and it is expected to hit screens sometime later this year -- though still lacks a specific premiere date.

Shortly after the initial announcement, series creator Clyde Phillips said the limited series would not undo the Season 8 finale, but offers the chance to write a "second finale" and make things "right." Phillips also explained that the revival series would reflect the passage of time since Dexter's original finale, which is of note, as -- back in January -- it was revealed that the revival would find Dexter Morgan in upstate New York, rather than Oregon or Florida.
