WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Devs, now streaming on FX on Hulu.

With Alex Garland's Devs in the home stretch, fans are eager to see just how the impending apocalypse will play out. Amaya's bosses, owner Forest (Nick Offerman) and his girlfriend Katie (Alison Pill), revealed Lily (Sonoya Mizuno) would be responsible for the Earth-shattering event, but Lily's chosen to stay at home in the penultimate episode rather than head to the Devs lab to spark this incident.

Unfortunately, when Amaya's security chief Kenton (Zach Grenier) comes to murder her, her entire plan falls apart. This leads to the series to unveil a new hero we never saw coming, but by the time he helps Lily out, it's too little, too late, as she decides to embark on her path towards doom.

This hero is none other than the homeless guy, Pete (Jefferson Hall), who lives outside Lily's apartment. He's been around since the series started and he's well-liked by Lily but lately, as he's been taking shots at Jamie (Jin Ha), it seems Pete might have a crush on Lily. He knows she lost Sergei (Karl Glusman), her Russian spy boyfriend, so he is overprotective at times. In Jamie's case, he doesn't care if they had a relationship before -- he just doesn't want anyone taking advantage of Lily.

It all comes apart, though, when Kenton sneaks into Lily's room, angry that she and Jamie had a secret meeting at Forest's house. He feels played by his Amaya bosses as he's been trying to silence Lily and Jamie about killing Sergei, only then to see his employers buddying up with them. Kenton uses his silencer and kills Jamie, and when he's blindsided by a hiding Lily with a lamp, it's clear only one of them will live. However, Kenton gets the upper hand. Just as the henchman is about to choke the life out of Lily, Pete arrives and strangles him to death. What makes the scene jarring is that Pete counts his breaths in Russian, and then watches him pass away.

He sits Lily down and reveals he's actually a spy too, initially sent to watch over Sergei. When Sergei was killed by Kenton for trying to steal Amaya's temporal code, his orders changed. Pete was now to watch Lily but never interfere in her life. He broke this order and made a startling choice as he liked Lily -- not romantically but enough to see strength in her and feel sorry for the tragedy that befell her. Pete indicates that with these dead bodies here, he has to head back to his handlers who will disavow knowledge of all this. Sadly, he can't help her out further because he's already disobeyed his seniors so he may well be on the lam now. But he offers her some advice: either head to her mom in Hong Kong ASAP as there's no extradition there, or go to the CIA. The latter will protect her but she'll be dragged into a battle between world powers, no longer having a life.

It's a warm sibling-like exchange but when he leaves, Lily, rather than exit to the airport, puts her passport down and takes up Kenton's gun. She no longer has anything to live for and after reuniting with Jamie, she's pissed that Amaya has once more taken someone she loved. This is why she's now fulfilling this destiny as she heads to the lab, not to necessarily start an apocalypse, but to kill Forest and Katie. No matter what, death followed her from this lab, from their mission, and rather than steer clear of it, Lily wants revenge -- even if it will bring about the end of the world.

Devs, entirely written, directed and edited by Alex Garland, is streaming on FX on Hulu. It stars Nick Offerman, Alison Pill, Sonoya Mizuno, Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Karl Glusman and Cailee Spaeny. New episodes will be released every Thursday.
