WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Devs, now streaming on FX on Hulu.
After Jamie (Jin Ha) broke Lily (Sonoya Mizuno) out of the mental institution Amaya security chief Kenton (Zach Grenier) had her confined to in the last Devs episode, one would have expected them to stay off the grid. They do discuss life on the run without technology, maybe contemplating become hermits in Napa, but the sixth episode quickly makes a U-turn on this notion, and takes the couple straight to Forest's (Nick Offerman) doorstep for answers from the boss himself.
While they're told the truth about what happened to Lily's former boyfriend Sergei (Karl Glusman), and why he had to die, though, another startling revelation is made. And in the process Amaya's dark destiny is revealed, leaving our heroes worried about the end of the world being less than a day away.
Forest leaves his assistant and girlfriend Katie (Alison Pill) to hold court with Lily while he and Jamie discuss life in general on the porch that night. Katie's very frank about everything, even Sergei's death as he was a Russian spy trying to steal Amaya's code for its temporal project. Mostly, she speaks about determinism, cause and effect and the timestream -- how everything happens for a reason.
Lily's angry but Katie makes it clear whether it's cancer in a person or a random event as a pen rolling on a table, something causes these things and it's in humanity's nature to deny as much. Devs is there to look at the before and after of these events, which is what they've been coding and predicting all along. It's why Katie's team has been a timeline voyeur all this time, not just because they want to pluck Forest's dead daughter from the past. They are trying to understand the past, reconcile it with the present, and ascertain what will bring an end to the future, soon. In fact, in just 21 hours.
Lily's stunned as Katie reaffirms for some time they couldn't go past a certain point as the holograms they've been seeing from the timestream turns to pure static. It's fuzzy which means their project has no data to pull from so it can't predict anything. Katie explains this means the universal laws of physics will break down and that's why their quantum coding can't see past this point, which has been getting closer and closer. To make Lily even more petrified, she's apparently the catalyst for this when she breaks into Amaya's golden cube, aka the lab.
Katie saw a vision of her death there so now we know why she also kept quiet about the girl's escape from the institution. Lily's part of this dark destiny and the Devs team has to let it play out. But Lily's scared because she doesn't want to bring about the apocalypse. However, Lily believes she has control -- or as Katie jests, the illusion of control -- and indicates she won't be coming to the lab, so there's no way she'll cause the incident Katie and Forest are resigned to.
Lily owns her fate and her plan is to stay far away from Devs now that she knows the truth. She isn't going to be part of this end of days and seeing as she never really knew Sergei, she wants to make up with Jamie and forget this mess. Now, Katie doesn't let her know about her death so there are still bits and pieces she and Forest keep secret. Or maybe it's just that not even they know exactly what Lily will do at the lab. All they know is the future may be canceled and as scientists, they're curious as to how it'll unfold.
