According to We Got This Covered, the secret villain will be the man-made Pokemon Mewtwo. The film will reportedly delve into his origin story and his evolution into becoming one of the movie's antagonists.

Originally introduced in Pokemon Red and Blue in 1996, Mewtwo was cloned from the DNA of the mythical Pokemon Mew. The game described Mewtwo as having been “created by a scientist after years of horrific gene splicing and DNA gene splicing." Powerful and secluded, Mewtwo has also appeared in Pokemon FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Pokemon X and Y and Pokemon Stadium, among others.

This powerful psychic Pokemon was expanded in 1998’s Pokemon: The First Movie where he was discovered by Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, who attempted to make it into a weapon under the guise of helping the frustrated Pokemon control its powers. While its powers grew, and it developed the ability to speak to both humans and Pokemon, Mewtwo learned of Giovanni’s deception. Angry and betrayed, it escaped and declared war on humanity by creating an army of cloned Pokemon on a remote island.

While Mewtwo’s first appearance in a live-action feature film is exciting, the interesting twist is that it will not the be only villain, as there will apparently be a human antagonist that seeks to control and manipulate Mewtwo for their own agenda. If that will be Giovanni, who the character has a previous history with, or a new original character has yet to be revealed.

Directed by Rob Letterman, Detective Pikachu stars Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe and the voice of Ryan Reynolds. It opens in theaters on May 10.
