The 3DS Detective Pikachu was a spinoff of the main Pokémon line, focusing more on narrative storytelling. The exact details of the Switch game haven't been revealed yet, but it was made clear that it's a continuation to the first game instead of being a continuation or adaptation of the recent movie of the same name.

That being said, The Pokémon Company emphasized that those who enjoyed the movie could turn to the video game to enjoy more of the talking Pikachu's adventures. Both the game and the movie follow a crime-solving, talking Pikachu and a boy named Tim Goodman solving mysteries together.
