With May's Detective Pikachu bringing Nintendo's iconic Pokemon franchise to cinematic live-action, complete with photorealistic pocket monsters, the film has received its official theatrical rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. The film has been rated PG for action/peril, some rude and suggestive humor, and thematic elements, likely alluding to the upcoming movie's themes of parental loss.RELATED: Pokemon Sword and Shield Starter Reimagined in Style of Detective Pikachu

The rating does not come as a particular surprise, even with Ryan Reynolds, best known for raunchy comedies and action movies, voicing the title character.

Given the franchise's family-friendly appeal to fans worldwide, omnipresent in the video games and popular anime series, it is unlikely a live-action adaptation would ever seriously venture towards PG-13 content. Even with Mewtwo now confirmed as an antagonist in the film along with intense Pokemon cage matches, the film will not compromise its tone. Now, whether some of the photorealistic depictions of Pokemon are too creepy for younger viewers is an entirely different debate.
