Detective Pikachu failed to zap Avengers: Endgame from the number one spot this weekend.

In an interesting twist, while Avengers: Endgame retained the number one spot for a third weekend in a row, Detective Pikachu came in above expectations, proving to be the first real bit of competition for the superhero epic since its release in April. Original estimates had Detective Pikachu set to take in between $50-$55 million in its opening weekend, with Avengers: Endgame eyeing a massive $80-$85 million in its third outing. Current numbers have Detective Pikachu coming in around $57.4 million, with Avengers: Endgame settling for $61.7 million.

That's still enough for Avengers: Endgame to cross $700 million domestically, with the film's new domestic haul looking to be around $722.1 million. That's after taking in $25.8 million today, making it 16 days for the film to hit $700 million stateside -- tying Star Wars: The Force Awakens' 16-day record.

While Detective Pikachu has some rather mixed reviews from critics -- earning just 64% on Rotten Tomatoes -- the film earned an impressive A- CinemaScore. Per exit polls, most of the audience for the film was made up of males (56%), with 61% of those male audience members under 25 and 32% under 17 years of age. Detective Pikachu appears to be performing very well, as estimates for the film's international haul are between $90-$100 million.
