During the CCXP Worlds 2020 virtual con, DC Comics revealed who will helm the Detective Comics series in March after its Future State event. Artist Dan Mora and writer Mariko Tamaki will team up again to helm #1034 and take the lead on the series.

DC's latest creative team announcement came during its DC Future State: Batman panel, which also created comic book history. Tamaki will be the second woman to be a lead writer on a core Batman title and the first to write for the series long-term, as reported by Polygon.

Prior to Tamaki, Devin Grayson served as a lead writer in 2000's Gotham Knights. Grayson's Batman series focused on themes of identity and found families. "Thematically I’m interested a lot in made families, the families we create for ourselves as opposed to our biological families," she said in a prior interview with Polygon. She described her take on Batman as "somebody who moves around at night, deliberately masking themselves, who’s completely human but has sacrificed things to become more than human — and, in some ways, in a theme that ran through my work — less than human."

Tamaki will also be writing DC's limited series, Future State: Dark Detective, which will also be illustrated by artist Dan Mora. Tamaki and Mora previously worked together in Detective Comics #1027, a commemorative issue celebrating 1,000 issues of the series. Their arc within the all-star lineup was titled, "The Gift."

Tamaki is an acclaimed writer who has previously written acclaimed issues of Hulk, Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass and Wonder Woman.

DC's Future State: The Next Batman will set the stage for Tamaki and Mora's Future State: Dark Detective collaboration. Tamaki and Mora's Dark Detective run will debut within January and its arc will run through February. Tamaki and Mora's Detective Comics run will begin in March. Although art hasn't been released yet at the time of this writing for either series, fans can see the below image for an idea of Mora's Batman.
