One of Batman's latest adventures in Detective Comics #1027 is shaping up to be a literal blast from the past — 1939 to be exact.DC Nation released four comic panels for an upcoming "Generations: Fractured." Created by Dan Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan, the story will be part of Detective Comics #1027: a mega-sized 144-page book celebrating 1000 issues since the Dark Knight made his first comic book appearance in Detective Comics #27. The story was initially meant to be part of DC's Generations series, but Generation Zero's Free Comic Book Day debut was put on hold due to both Dan DiDio's departure from the company and the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.RELATED: DC Reveals Detective Comics #1027's Full Talent Lineup

The panels show Batman fighting a series of Halloween-themed monsters in the Wayne Family Gallery, including a werewolf, mummy, vampire and Frankenstein. Naturally he manages to defeat them all before turning his attention to the real villain: Calendar Man wearing a Phantom of the Opera costume. However, after grabbing a fire extinguisher to put out a portrait of his parents on fire, Batman is blinded by a flash of light that literally splits the character into multiple panels, each featuring a different version of his Batsuit. When the light fades, we not only see the Caped Crusader transported back to 1939, but wearing his original Detective Comics #27 costume as well.

Not only do Jurgens and Nowlan successfully capture the look of Bob Kane and Bill Finger's 1930s Batsuit — long pointed ears, triangular cape and rounded yellow utility belt — but their visuals cleverly pay homage to classic DC art design. This story will be one of twelve Batman tales featured in Detective Comics #1027 from a variety of writers and artists.

Detective Comics #1027 goes on sale Sept. 15 from DC Comics.
