Season of the Chosen ushered in a brand new era of storytelling and character development that hadn't been seen in Destiny 2 up to this point. Mortal enemy of the Guardians Aldran Sav, now known as Crow, was transformed into a valuable ally who saved commander Zavala's life in the season finale. The Cabal almost brought the Guardians to extinction during the Red War, but Emperess Caiatl proved to be different than her predecessors. After many trials of combat in her proving grounds, players formed an uneasy alliance with another long-time enemy. Now Season of the Splicer has arrived, and players will once again have to question what they know about another adversarial group,  The Fallen.

The Vex have used their simulation technology to block the sun and cover Earth's last city in never-ending darkness. The Warlock Vanguard Ikora suggests that Mithrax may be the only one who has the knowledge to hack the Vex network and end the simulation. Mithrax is Kell of House Light, a house of his own creation that is made of free-thinking Eliksni who want to return to the presence of the Great Machine. Mithrax is known as a sacred splicer; splicers are a small collective of Eliksni scientists with advanced knowledge in cybernetics, bioengineering, and bio-hacking.

Mithrax and the splicers should sound familiar to experienced Guardians. Mithrax was the clever Fallen Captain that evaded players on Titan. Mithrax is a visionary who believes the Eliksni's future resides with Traveler's basking in its light, but he rose through the ranks just like any other Fallen Dreg. He used to be part of the House of Wolves and pledged loyalty to Skolas and Mara Sov after she took command of the Wolves by defeating Skolas. After the Guardians spared his life on Titan, Mithrax started to forge an allegiance with the guardians of the tower. He returned to aid them during the Zero Hour mission and helped stop Eramis from stealing SIVA tech from a vault in the old tower.

Fallen Splicers from the House of Devils used SIVA tech to challenge Guardians during the Rise of Iron expansion in Destiny. These cybernetic fallen would give us a glimpse of the monstrosities we would later face in the Deep Stone Crypt. These Devils fused themselves with SIVA, a nanite technology created by the Warmind Rasputin. This nanite tech once wiped out the Iron Lords. The Guardians stopped the Devils from leaving the Plaguelands with SIVA but gave players a great example of what a group of Fallen splicers are capable of when they have powerful technology and resources at their disposal.

Mithrax is one of the last remaining sacred splicers and has found a way to hack into the Vex network with a strange device he grafted onto one of his mechanical arms. He's also modified other parts of his being, like installing some type of cybernetic visor over his face. This Mithrax is far different than the last time we encountered him, but he's kept his word about pledging loyalty to the Traveler and continues to be as clever as ever. This type of manipulation of Vex technology is new to the lore and will take players into unexplored territory where the Vex are concerned.

The Vex have been hypothesized to be a result of the light and darkness playing a "flower game" in the primordial garden long before the universe existed. The Vex originated from a single recurring pattern that dominated the entire simulation like a virus, which pleased the darkness and annoyed the light. The Vex's modus operandi always involves manipulating the timestreams via simulation technology, but their actual motives, other than just trying to turn reality into one encompassing Vex simulation, have always been shrouded in mystery. Now Mithrax has developed a device that will let players hack further into the Vex networks than ever before and finally learn more about this mysterious race of domineering organic machines.
