A cosplayer brilliantly thunder-breathes life into Demon Slayer's cowardly but hard-working Zenitsu Agatsuma.

On Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, a cosplayer by the name of 貂蝉的腿毛 which translates to "Diaochan's leg hair," has transported himself into the world of Demon Slayer. At first glance, the cosplay is relatively simple and unassuming. Standing in front of a green screen and ready for action, the cosplayer slips on the demon slayer's signature white-triangle patterned yellow and orange haori. Perched on top of the stand is a mini fan, and since the fan is too small to blow enough wind for dramatic effect, the cosplayer pinned the end of the haori to the green screen. However, in the next second, the scene transforms. With some impressive lightning edits, the cosplayer turns into Zenitsu as he utilizes Thunderclap and Flash, the only form of Thunder Breathing he can use.

The Cosplay Is Better Than Live-Action Adaptations

Many viewers were awestruck, commenting on how real it looked. Some even believed that the video should serve as a blueprint for Netflix whenever they make a live-action adaptation of anime. Numerous live-action adaptations of anime series such as Death Note, Dragonball Evolution and Avatar: The Last Airbender have received an overwhelmingly negative reception, not only due to casting choices, but because the dramatized version often is unable to replicate the magic anime have without making it look awkward.

Written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge, Demon Slayer follows a young boy named Tanjiro Kamado who joins an elite group called the Demon Slayer Corps after the powerful demon Muzan slaughters his entire family, save for his younger sister Nezuko who survives after turning into a demon. Tanjiro hopes that by becoming a Demon Slayer, he will be able to track down the demon responsible for killing his family and find a cure to turn Nezuko back into a human. Tanjiro has a hard road ahead of him: to get to Muzan, he'll have to go through Muzan's faction of demons called the Twelve Kizuki. With the help of his friends Inosuke Hashibara and Zenitsu, Tanjiro finds the strength to face his foes.

Demon Slayer Topped the Box Office

In 2019, the sales for the manga series shot straight up due to Ufotable's anime adaptation. The series recorded over 120 million physical and digital copies sold in December 2020, marking it as the second series after One Piece to have sold over 100 million copies. In February 2021, Demon Slayer sold over 150 million copies. The anime adaptation received praise for its seamless battle animation and won several accolades for its animation from Crunchyroll Anime Awards and the Tokyo Anime Awards. The 2020 anime film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train grossed over $500 million and became the first non-Hollywood production to emerge at the top of the box office.
