The way Demon Slayer portrays the art of swordsmanship in it's anime adaptation is beautiful, but there is no swordsmanship without a sword. Fans of the series will know that it doesn't matter if incredibly well animated blue waves or flashes of lightning trail a sword if the sword itself loses it's usefulness by breaking. Luckily, the color changing nichirin blades in Demon Slayer seem nearly indestructible when wielded by a strong swordsman.

Though the blades have been shown to break from time to time, it is made clear that this is a weakness of the wielder, not the weapon itself. Like the nichirin blade, there are a number of other items, weapons, and tools in Demon Slayer that are not powerful without being used appropriately by the characters in the show.

10 Inosuke's Boar Mask

Inosuke's flexibility

The use of masks in Demon Slayer offers as many advantages as it does disadvantages in the first season. For the short period of time that Tanjiro's character design is complimented by a mask, it proves to be more of a detriment, but Inosuke's boar mask is different.

In order to hide his beautiful face and intimidate his foes, Inosuke hides behind a mask that forces his enemies to question his humanity. Demon Slayer's resident best boy fights with the ferocity and form of a wild boar, making his mask more of a compliment to his skills than a detriment.

9 Yushiro's Acupuncture Needle/Supporting Spell Sheet

Demon Slayer Tanjiro v/s Yahaba (Helped By Yushiro)

Tamaya and Yushiro are the second and third demons that Tanjiro is able to see as allies in the first season of Demon Slayer. Though Yushiro's sharp attitude and obsessive personality might make it easy to see him as an enemy, his actions prove that he is indeed an ally.

During Tanjiro's battle against two demons sent by Muzan Kibutsuji, he struggles to fully understand the blood demon art being used to course correct projectiles midair. Until Yushiro lent Tanjrio his sight with a spell that sticks to the demon slayer's forehead with an acupuncture needle, Tanjiro was certainly doomed.

8 Blood Demon Art Drum

In Episode 11 Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and a small trio of siblings are all caught in Tsuzumi Mansion with a demon. Luckily, each is equipped with a tool that proves useful enough to keep them alive.

Tanjiro and Zenitsu carry with them a nichirin blade capable of beheading demons. The siblings trapped in the mansion hold one of the drums that was cut loose from the demon who controls the mansion's layout and orientation with his blood demon art. With just a single tap on the drum, the mansion shifts, keeping the kids safe from harm as long as they hit the drum before their enemy enters the room they are hiding in.

7 Food

In the eyes of viewers watching Demon Slayer on their smart phones with a bowl of ramen cooling on their kitchen table, food can often be taken for granted. In a historical setting filled with monstrous demons that terrorize the land and its people, food is scarce enough to function as a peace offering.

Fans of the series will remember that the friendship formed between Tanjiro and Zenitsu starts with a neatly wrapped Onigiri. Later, after Zenitsu, Tanjiro, and Inosuke are exhausted by their time in Tsuzumi Mansion, the three bond over a meal that would make anyone's mouth water. Though these three may have found a way to bond without food, the show makes it clear that food was a large part in forging the strong bond that these three characters share.

6 Messenger Crows/Sparrows

Messenger Sparrow

The different ways modern anime have filled in the role of the modern smart phone deserves its own list. Although the pocket from Tower of God and the messenger crows in Demon Slayer are not one-for-one replacements for a smart phones, they symbolically fill the role by giving characters a way to communicate with each other from a distance.

The messenger crows in Demon Slayer are actually their own species of animal, but that does not stop them from being utilized like a tool by the Demon Slayer Corp., who uses the crows to send mission updates and prompts to the agents they have spread throughout the world. Though they are normally shouting directions, Season 1 also gives the crows a moment to shine by saving Nezuko and Tanjiro's life.

5 Knife-Syringe

7 Tamayo the demon doctor

Before Tanjiro and Nezuko meet Lady Tamayo, their mission to cure demons by restoring their humanity was nothing more than a dream. Though it was clear by their attitude and mental fortitude that this dream would one day come true, they had no way to make it happen until meeting Tamayo.

The true science behind the cure Tamayo mentions is still unclear, but in order to make said cure, the demon doctor needs blood samples from Kibutsuji's twelve demon moons. When Tanjiro defeats one of the outcast demon moons, he uses a throwing knife with a syringe attachment to draw the blood. Not only is the knife-syringe a cool looking tool, it is the key to restoring Nezuko's humanity.

4 Shinobu's Anti-Venom

Demon Slayer Shinobu mimicking the gentle nature of her sister

Though Zenitsu's incessant crying can be a bit annoying, no viewer truly wants to see the shaggy haired demon slayer die. After being poisoned by a demon that turns its victims into creepy spiders with human heads, Zenitsu seemed to be on his death bed until Shinobu appeared to create an anti-venom.

Without Shinobu's mystery box of chemicals and her knowledge of the pharmaceutical sciences, Zenitsu may have turned into a tragic character much earlier than he was meant to.

3 Cloud Mist Pine Box

The light-weight box that Tanjrio wears as a backpack may seem inconsequential to viewers who have gotten used to the protagonist's character design. These viewers may need reminded that without this box, Nezuko would never have been there to save her brother when he was outmatched by his foe.

Since Nezuko cannot count as an item, weapon, or tool, the box that Tanjiro uses to keep her by his side at all times must be recognized for it's usefulness. On top of this, for a demon who cannot be exposed to the sun without risking death, the box offers Nezuko a portable resting place that no other demon has access to.

2 Nichirin Sword

Giyu Tomioka the Water Hashira holding his blade in the snow in Demon Slayer.

The nichirin swords that the demon slayer corp. utilize in combat are made from a unique ore that absorbs sunlight. The blades are also capable of understanding it's user, and adapts its shade to demonstrate the way it sees the swordsman.

Every demon that Tanjiro has encountered is equipped with regenerative powers, making them impossible to kill with an ordinary sword. The nichirin blade is the one way a traditional swordsman can kill the demon, and it is still only deadly if the wielder beheads the demon with the blade. This weapon is not only useful, it is the only reason Tanjiro is still alive.

1 Shinobu's Demon Poison

Shinobu Kochou glides into combat in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

For those that call the Insect Hashira a foe, Shinobu's knowledge can and should be considered a weapon. Out of all the Hashira, Shinobu is the only one shown to kill a demon without using a nichirin blade to cut off its head. This is thanks to the poison that she invented to kill a demon without the need to remove its head from its body.

Though this poison does not get much time to shine in the first season, when it does, it forces viewers to question the purpose of a nichirin blade in the first place. A quiver of arrows tipped with Shinobu's poison would surely prove to be more efficient.
