Demon Slayer, based on the manga series of the same name, surpassed Mortal Kombat in the United States over the weekend, earning $6.4 million domestically in ticket sales. Meanwhile, for comparison, Mortal Kombat earned $6.2 million.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train takes place after the events of the first season of Demon Slayer. The anime film sees Tanjiro and his fellow Demon Slayers track down a demon aboard a train. Since release, the film has broken a number of records, including one in Japan after becoming the biggest IMAX release.

Mortal Kombat was released in the same weekend and adapts the characters from the popular video game franchise of the same name. Despite earning mixed reviews from critics, the film enjoyed a $23,302,503 opening and has thus far earned $66,900,000 worldwide.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film is now in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max.
