Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has just been released on Blu-ray and DVD, and the home release of the popular anime's first feature film is already breaking records in Japan.

Japanese sales figures for the Blu-ray and DVD versions of Mugen Train as well as its limited-edition version were tallied following the film's Dec. 21 home release. According to a report from Oricon, Mugen Train has sold a combined 1,714,000 copies across its regular and limited editions on both Blu-ray and DVD, earning the anime film top spot in both the Blu-ray and DVD categories, with the regular edition selling 633,000 and 459,000 copies, respectively. Mugen Train's limited edition, meanwhile, moved 368,000 copies on Blu-ray and 183,000 on DVD.

Although the report might not have included sales from some online stores, Mugen Train has still managed to break several records on the Japanese sales charts. The success of Mugen Train's regular edition marks the first time an anime film has held the first-place ranking on the DVD chart since Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo in 2009. Mugen Train has also broken Ponyo's record for being the first anime film to sell over 500,000 copies on DVD. On Blu-ray, Mugen Train's regular edition has already hit second place on the rankings for the animated films with the most sales in a single year, setting itself up to challenge the record set by Disney's 2014 hit, Frozen.

Following its release in domestic theaters earlier this year, Mugen Train became the second highest-grossing anime film ever at the U.S. box office, bringing in $44.9 million and surpassing Pokemon 2000's $43.7 million domestic gross to become the territory's second-biggest anime film of all time. Seeing even greater success at the Japanese box office, Mugen Train's 32.47 billion yen ($313.9 million) propelled the film to become the highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, pulling ahead of the previous 31.68 billion yen record set by Miyazaki's Spirited Away.

The Mugen Train limited edition Blu-ray was announced back in September. The bundle provides fans with both physical and digital extras, including a rigid outer box with exclusive cover art from character designer Akira Matsuhshima, the movie's soundtrack on a CD, a deluxe booklet and a commentary track featuring the original voice cast with English subtitles.

Set after the events of Demon Slayer's first season, Mugen Train follows Tanjiro, Inosuke, Zenitsu and Nezuko as they join the Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku, on a mission to investigate demon-related activity on a train that's every bit as strange and deadly as its conductor. The events of the film are retold during Demon Slayer's ongoing second season, which also includes the Entertainment District arc and the introduction of Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira.
