Even though the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to shuttered theaters and several films either being pushed back a year or moving to streaming services, there are a few films that have been a box office success. One of these films is Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train.

Demon Slayer has crossed $310 million worldwide, doing particularly well in Hong Kong and Vietnam. It has also passed Tenet's worldwide gross of $305 million. In Japan, Demon Slayer has grossed a confirmed 30.3 billion yen -- which puts it on track to surpass the Hayao Miyazaki classic Spirited Away as the top-grossing film of all time in the country.

Demon Slayer has broken numerous records since its Oct. 16 release, including the largest IMAX release in Japan. Films it has surpassed at the Japanese box office include Frozen II and Bohemian Rhapsody. It is expected to debut in U.S. and Canadian theaters in 2021.

Based on the manga of the same name by Koyoharu Gotōge, Demon Slayer focuses on a boy named Tanjiro who joins the Demon Slayer Corps after his village is destroyed by demons. The anime has become an international hit, with Mugen Train set during Season 1 of the show. Mugen Train follows Tanjiro and his fellow demon slayers as they investigate the possibility of a demon passenger on a train. Though the manga has ended, Gotōge created a special one-shot chapter focusing on Kyojuro Rengoku which ties into Mugen Train.
