Demon Slayer is a hit shonen action series set in early modern Japan, on the eve of World War I. The world is rapidly changing, but the battle of demons vs. demon slayers is eternal, and Tanjiro Kamado stepped into that world willingly to restore his sister Nezuko's humanity at any cost. Along the way, Tanjiro will meet many friends, enemies and everything in between.

The cast of Demon Slayer is a rich and colorful one, and these characters vary not just in their fighting style or stylish outfits, but also their personalities and manners of speech. Some characters in this series are rather talkative to their friends and enemies, and other characters say relatively little, or at least, they don't spend time on idle chatter or boasting.

10 TALKATIVE CHARACTER: Zenitsu Agatsuma Is Always Complaining About Something

Zenitsu, unconcious and ready to fight in Demon Slayer.

Zenitsu Agatsuma is a lightning-themed demon slayer, and he is shockingly quick and deadly while he's asleep. However, Zenitsu is also known for his loud and obnoxious behavior, and he quickly wears out even Tanjiro's generous patience at times.

Zenitsu is quick to complain about just about anything, most often panicking about imminent danger or longing for Nezuko to pay attention to him. Zenitsu's mouth is always running during an adventure, even when enemies are nearby.

9 QUIET CHARACTER: Nezuko Kamado Has A Muzzle

Nezuko Kamado is the sole survivor of the Kamado massacre at the hands of Muzan Kibutsuji, but she lost her humanity in the process. Now Nezuko is a demon, but she won't let herself harm anyone to sate her thirst for human blood. She agreed to wear a bamboo muzzle to keep her fangs away from human flesh.

Thus, Nezuko has very few lines of dialogue in the series, usually just nodding or making facial expressions to communicate. Even without the muzzle, though, she probably wouldn't be that talkative anyway. She is the quiet and polite type, not the life of the party.

8 TALKATIVE CHARACTER: Inosuke Hashibara Likes To Brag & Taunt His Enemies

Inosuke Hashibara was raised by animals, and even though he has little experience being among other people, he's perfectly willing to talk all day long. In fact, he is quick to speak up when anyone annoys him even slightly, and quick to boast about anything he can think of. He's much chattier than the animals he grew up with.

In battle, Inosuke is liable to boast about his prowess and intimidate his enemies with his words and his dual Nichirin swords alike, and he is always full of hot air. Sometimes, Inosuke can back up those big words, but other times, he needs an ally to bail him out, even if his pride won't allow it.

7 QUIET CHARACTER: Kanao Tsuyuri Would Rather Flip Coins

kanao tsuyuri

When Tanjiro and his friends ended up at the butterfly estate, they met a handful of girls who were ready to help them train, and most of them were lively and chatty. But there was an exception, a silent young lady named Kanao Tsuyuri. She has some skill, but won't ever boast about it.

Kanao stayed quiet as Tanjiro continued his training, but despite her shyness, Kanao soon took a liking to Tanjiro, and vice versa. Tanjiro was happy to make her acquaintance, and he also encouraged her to stop flipping coins all the time and find the courage to make her own decisions. Kanao may soon take Tanjiro's words to heart.

6 TALKATIVE CHARACTER: Shinobu Kocho Likes To Mess With People

Shinobu raises a hand

Shinobu Kocho is the insect Hashira, and she is known for her butterfly theme, her petite size and her heavy use of poisons to take down demons that are much bigger and stronger than her. It's tempting to think she's the strong but silent type, yet Tanjiro soon learned otherwise.

Shinobu is rather chatty during battle and at the butterfly estate, and she is quick to tease her enemies and allies alike with her sharp words. She has polite but sharp-witted dialogue, and she's not afraid to intimidate an ally if they're annoying her. She'll even stand up to Inosuke verbally if he tries to act tough around her.

5 QUIET CHARACTER: Giyu Tomioka Is Aloof & Cool

Giyu considers sparing Nezuko

Giyu Tomioka is the current water Hashira, but given his personality, one would think he's an ice Hashira instead. Giyu appeared early in the series, trying to slay Nezuko until Tanjiro convinced him to stand down. Giyu also took down Rui, the spider-themed lower moon 5-ranked demon.

Giyu still doesn't like Nezuko or Tanjiro, but he will at least put up with them for now, especially since Kaguya approves of them. Giyu is also known for not making many friends, and is even teased for it. He's not exactly warm and fuzzy on the outside or the inside.

4 TALKATIVE CHARACTER: Kyojuro Rengoku Has A Strong Personality

The flame Hashira, as of the Mugen Train story arc, is the lively Kyojuro Rengoku, a demon slayer known for having a radiant personality to match his intense, flame-based fighting style. Kyojuro has been practicing hard since his boyhood to become a Hashira, just like his father had once been.

Kyojuro is a boisterous and upbeat hero who fears no enemy, and he is quick to assure his friends and allies, and talk tough to his enemies, such as Akaza. Kyojuro isn't generally known for small talk, but if he has something to say, he'll say it. He also famously cries "Delicious!" with every bite of food.

3 QUIET CHARACTER: Muzan Kibutsuji Speaks Tersely

Muzan from Demon Slayer

The archvillain himself, Muzan Kibutsuji, ranks among the quietest anime villains in the modern era, contrasting with chattier villains such as Mahito the curse, Tomura Shigaraki and a few others. Muzan is deadly and ambitious, but he won't brag about any of it.

Instead, Muzan keeps a surprisingly low profile, even assuming a human disguise to blend in with the Tokyo crowds. During meetings with the twelve moons, he will only deliver tightly-worded orders or criticism, and little more. Like Giyu, Muzan is aloof and cool on the outside, but he's evil about it.

2 TALKATIVE CHARACTER: Enmu Taunts His Enemies In Battle

Enmu from Demon Slayer holding out hand mouth.

Enmu is the lower moon 1-ranked demon, and he is determined to prove his worth to Muzan and join the ranks of the upper six moons somehow. He convinced Muzan to spare his life, and then he prepared a dream-based trap for Tanjiro's squad on the Mugen Train. Soon, he actually became that train.

Tanjiro broke free of that trap, and he and Inosuke faced Enmu directly. Enmu was chatty the entire time, taunting Tanjiro while also explaining how he had fused with the train and what his goals were. Enmu will even deliver monologues to himself at times.

1 QUIET CHARACTER: Gyomei Himejima Is Soft-Spoken

Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Pillar Hashira, praying as tears run over his cheeks

The stone Hashira, Gyomei, is a gentle giant who is patient and firm like the earth itself. He made a brief appearance in the anime, and he will no doubt make many more appearances later in the story. Based on his behavior so far, he's not the type to make small talk or talk big during a fight.

So far, Gyomei is the type to speak little and do much, and reassure his allies with his actions and just a few well-meaning words. His abundance of prayer beads also suggests a quiet and gentle personality.
